Door Na Ja ( cover version ) from Jannat

Door Na Ja ( cover version ... Lyrics & Chords

The last month had been really busy since Thillana, the group I perform with in the bay area had our 10th annual light music show last Saturday. One of the videos can be caught here . I have done the harmonies for Allegra, and am the lead female singer for Aayiram thaamarai which follows the Allegra song in the above video. Many thanks to some of the bay area muzibians who made it :))

I have been listening to this song like forever now…. I am not a fan of Pritam, the music director per se, but I like his tunes for GTP ( general time pass :-) However that being said, I really like the guitar riffs in this, and the original singer, Rana Mazumdar’s voice. Another reason for covering this song is that the tune and the lyrics have never failed to move me each and every time I have listened to it.

Have done a few overlays and harmonies which the original doesn’t have. And, this marks my first cover which has originally been sung by a male singer. As always, I have tried to pay a lot of attention to the lyrics and pronounce it to the best of my ability.

Thanks in advance for your time, and would love to see your thoughts on this one…. And, yes, best enjoyed in headphones

Movie: Jannat
Original music by: Pritam
Originally sung by: Rana Mazumdar
Cover version- lead vocals & harmonies by: Meera Manohar
Mixed by: Meera Manohar

Meera,
very cool. I like this song. Pritam is the king of rock ballads, no matter where he has lifted it from.
And it also features one of my fav instrumentalists, Niladri Kumar on Zitar.
The pitch of the song is suitable for male vox, so I feel its little too low for you. Though you have given it a nice shade by adding the octave harmony.
Great stuff.

Much has been written about Pritam, so I won’t go into details. But I have a love-hate relationship with his music. He is a great arranger, gives a very different rock flavored feel to otherwise very unlistenable track from some part of the world. Though plagiarism is never condoned….

(and yeah, I am listening thru headphones)

That was quick Satyajit, and thanks for your time- totally agree on the higher range of the original, and it being more suitable for male vox. But then have never tried a song in the lower ranges , especially when the original is not :P so decided to go for it!!

Subbu: thank you, glad to see you enjoyed it!! I kinda envisioned myself being forgotten/ jilted by a lover to bring out the effect, wine glass scenario is indeed interesting : D

Well…let’s give Pritam some credit for adopting rock ballad for Hindi numbers. He gave some real good numbers in movies like Metro and Gangster and then never looked back. No wonders, he may not be original always but is amongst most popular composers in Bollywood today.
Coming to your rendition……simply superb in terms of singing, feel, expressions and voice modulations. It’s looking like an original now as a female version. 5/5.

Meera, Not a fan of Pritam, but just loved this song very much. You were superb in your modulations and voice control, and great expressions too. The best part I liked was your singing in lower ranges-that was awesome!
I feel this is one of the best of all your postings here.

Sounded meditative and sublime to my ears. Good job with the singing and harmonies Meera!. On the downside I felt that the singing energy of the distorted guitar was a bit out of sync with your voice … I think it would more match a higher pitched emotional vocal performance.

Good innovative job nevertheless and kudos to your ideas!. :-)

Hi Meera, Ur voice sounded too sweet for this one:), Well, I could not connect with the song somehow. IMHO, the song pick was a complete mismatch for you. I just love this song and completely agree with Satyajit. The range of the original was not completely justified in your cover and sounded DULL. Its not your fault as the original song was made differently. For me, this one did not work barring all the good singing. But well, I would appreciate ur effort. Keep going:)

I will rate this one as a 4/5. One more thing, can you pass along the track to me on “ajrockaj@gmail.com”

Meera,
Not a fan of the song as such. Your voice sounds a lot richer/fuller in the lower end of your range. Very interesting discovery for me. I think you should do more songs in this range. Like Nitin mentioned, it is very clear that you have put in a lot of effort into this and that shows your passion. Loved your expressions, stress on words and most (not all) of your harmonies . Very nice mix too. Excellent overall! 5/5

Correctly said Nitin…. One of the most hardworking Singers I have seen…. Meera wonderful singing & total presentation…. Though I didnot like the chorus effect in most of the parts…. it took away the clarity of the vocals…. Harmonies were fab…. I like Pritam’s approach of composition…. He brought a new genre to Bollywood n its the key to his success…. I don know whether it was a vocal cut track or not but it lacked the punched…. a lil tweak with the track may have been done aswell…. 5/5 from me….

Shampak.

PS: A suggestion, though i have no clue how the original is – the first mein at ~0:47 will sound better on this song if sung close mouthed, IMO.

George- thank you. can you give me a timestamp as to which harmonies, will help me improve

Shampak— not a vocal cut, I increased the pitch of the track, so I could do the lower octave of the song. The lower range of the original was way too low— couldn’t reach it LOL. Thanks for your time, as always much appreciated

There was nothing special in the song which would allow u to showcase ur talents and so it was very plain. I wouldnt become a fan of Pritam based on this song as well….lol

Pritam – the copy Maestro. Right from the song that he is most famous for (aami je tomaar) has been lifted from other songs (aami je jolsha gore).

Could not connect to the song at any level at all. And for some reason I was wondering if the pitching was correct right from the start. May be some weird guitar chords and some unconventional harmony parts and my tired ears…

Anyway I see some good improvement in your pronunciation. I will wait for another upload of yourself where I can feel more involved.
