Lyrics & Chords
Thank you Murali for yet again delving and finding meaningful stuff to write about the composer, the krithi et al.
Write up by Murali Venkatraman
“Have you read all these books ?!”
My mother exclaimed innocently looking at the many cartons of books I have ranging from highly technical ones which ran for thousand pages or more to ones which were pocket-sized that captured popular science in an interesting way. I was stunned for a moment since I did not know how to answer. I took a look at my big collection and responded:
“No amma. I hope I will read them some day”
She got busy with kitchen work and had forgotten the conversation. For her it was just a curiosity as to how much her son could study.
But the question reverberated in my mind. Why do I have so many books some of which I may never be reading ? For example, I have books on mathematical logic, topology etc but given my time constraints, I wonder if I will ever get to read them. It led me to an important decision – “No more books until absolutely necessary”. My mother’s simple innocence-laden question pushed me to rethink about my attitude towards buying books.
While talking about the life of the poet-philosopher-composer Sadashiva Brahmendra one cannot but admire how a simple instruction from his mother-in-law transformed his life from one of a possible ordinary family man into someone who moved freely like a gypsy and composed beautiful songs with deep philosophical thought. It may be a folklore, that his mother-in-law’s words “Don’t come inside the house” on the night of his marriage consummation, made him rethink about his real pursuits in life.
However, consider another related question : “What is the purpose of life if there is one at all ?”. This seemingly simple question has been addressed for centuries and people are still trying to find an answer. With brahmendra, the simple instruction/question did have a deep impact on the man who finally came to the public domain and we were blessed with an exceptional poet. Thus seemingly simple innocent questions/instructions may bring about some dramatic irreversible transformations.
Read more about Sadasiva Brahmendra here :
To quote my mentor Dr. Bosco Emmanuel:
“Pioneers of science always asked and addressed simple questions. How did D. J. Thouless arrive at the branching in the theory of percolation ? He just asked a simple question. What will be the conductivity of carbon if I randomly punched a few holes in it ? He took a carbon sheet and punched a few random holes in it, measured the conductivity and plotted a graph of the conductivity versus available area. He finally ended up being an exponent in percolation theory "
In this beautiful song which is set in the ragam shyama, which is a cousin of shuddha saaveri and aarabhi, Sadashiva expounds beautiful descriptions of a divine being (krishna) when he himself is in a state of trance. He instructs the mind to roam in the field of universal consciousness (the Brahman) aided sweetly by the music.
In the movie, this comes as a lullaby that the sishya sings for the guru. The director K. Vishwanath had tastefully used a break in the song in the guise of sishya forgetting the lyrics. This invariably invites the voice of guru (SPB) and an uninfringing melody which gently rocks the listener is born. In our version, I have expanded the song a little more to allow more room for the male singer to savor.
And this I believe is one of Meera’s best renditions in which her gamakam laden voice has captured the soul of the song.

Oh, Mind ! Undertake your pilgrimage in the Brahmam !
The locks of Brahman, is adorned with the plumes of an exhilarated peacock (mada sikhi)! The cheeks of the Supreme One outwit the brightness of a mirror !
He sports around in the fort of the breast-hillocks of Mahalakshmi (Sri). For his devotees, He is a Kalpavriksha in the court yard (mandira Mandaare) Supreme ascetics (paramahamsa) delight in that face-moon (mukha chandraa) as a partridge bird (chakore – with obvious reference to the chakora bird that thirsts for moonlight) Oh, Mind! May your pilgrimage be complete in this Brahman that fills everything with the flow of the music from His flute(murali) ! !

Hi Meera, Your rendering is excellent. Though I would have preferred the pure version without the film inspired break at the beginning of charanam it is a great effort. You have a lovely voice and are exceptionally gifted. Keep singing………

Ah….Krishna….Narayana….Govinda….
DIVINE, IMMACULATE and IMMORTAL rendition in both your divine and heavenly voices.
##################################################
Om Namoh Bhagavate Vasudevaya Namaha
##################################################
Wonderfully written divine bro Murali. Indeed your name befits you, so does divine Chechi Meera’s name befit her.
Few more words from my side INSPIRED by the song and with Lord Shri Krishna’s grace to compliment Murali’s words:
##################################################
What is God or how to understand Lord Krishna in the form of Brahman:
##################################################
There are lot of people in the world who have a hard time understanding that God can be an actual person.
God’s unique personal identity is THE highest aspect of the infinite consciousness.
##################################################
Let us look at an analogy to understand the three main features of God:
##################################################
1. Say you are looking at a mountain from a distance. We humans can only make out the shape and size from far off.
This can be compared to comprehend God as Brahman.
God’s impersonal energy emanates from Him just as light shines out from its source.
##################################################
2. Now when we humans move closer to the mountain, a lot of more characteristics of the mountain can be seen like:
the colors of its foliage
Now compare this to understanding that God is within our hearts as Paramatma or THE Supersoul.
##################################################
3. Finally, when we arrive at the foothill of the mountain and further as we explore its soil, vegetation, creatures, rivers and the finite and infinite life in and around the mountain we feel the Oneness with the cosmic energy of the place.
Now compare this to understanding God the person or Bhagavan.
##################################################
Bhagavan is the source of Brahman and Paramatma and is therefore is one with them.
In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan are called the three phases of the Absolute Truth.
##################################################
Lord Krishna is thus the ABSOLUTE TRUTH of life.
##################################################
As per the Vedas our spirit soul is composed of:
1. Eternity (Holy Spirit in time without an end)
2. Consciousness or Infinite knowledge
(So understand that mind is finite knowledge)
3. Happiness (Bliss)
##################################################
Vedas have described Lord Krishna in a beautiful way:
- He is a beautiful youth with a glowing complexion the color of rain clouds
- He plays a flute, attracting the hearts of all
- His cheeks are brilliant
- His smile enchanting
- He wears a peacock feather in His curly black hair and a flower garland around His neck
- His beautiful garments are the color of lightning
- His toenails resemble the light of the moon
Divine Miracle of Lord Krishna, did you realize what you just experienced, wanted to give you all divine souls a piece of it with Lord Krishna’s grace.
DID you see LORD KRISHNA through the subtle INNER EYES. Yes you did with your own faith and devotion. It is said that if you truly try to visualize Lord Krishna with devotion and faith while reading the above description of Lord Krishna as given in the Vedas, then Lord Krishna will grace you with an experience of his form, grace and infinite consciousness THAT VERY MOMENT.
##################################################
This song of divine bro Murali and divine Meera Chechi and Murali’s write up has brought about this piece of knowledge from the Vedas as their devotion and faith for Lord Krishna (Muralidhara) is pouring through this song (praise of God).
##################################################
Rating:
INFINITY of the Krishna consciousness.
##################################################
Favorites:
Favorite that goes into the heart and soul of the infinite consciousness of Lord Krishna.
##################################################
THANK YOU a million * trillion times for making me experience THE DIVINE once more. I am in gratitude to you two divine souls and to the Lord of Lord’s Divine Lord Shri Krishna for bringing me this experience of feeling the ONENESS, ETERNITY, PEACE, INFINITE CONSCIOUSNESS and BLISS ever pervading in HIM.

Thanks Meera and Murali for the beautiful write up.
Truly said …. Lucky are we born as human beings
whose main purpose is to realize the Supreme Immortal Brahman … the invisible Conscious ruling the World in all its glory and majesty.
Knowing one’s Self and seeing the divinity in God’s creation alone helps us to create the bond of love leading to eternal peace.
Man is born for this purpose – God realization – materialistic pleasure do fade away. The acts of good deeds alone will remain as an asset with us forever.
Songs like this just takes us into some eternal realm forgetting the world and always will remain in our memories for ever.
Enjoyed your rendition a lot and appreciate your effort for giving us the joy.
Beautiful song and hope everyone who listens to this will cherish it as much as i do.
Sure for my fav dear and full marks from me.
Good luck both of U.

@ Ramya: Glad you enjoyed the write-up ! And thanks for being here first !
@ Rajeev : It was not Meera’s fault that the break was introduced. It was me who arranged it and she played an innocent accomplice. Originally this series was intended to be a tribute to the original movie. So, some of the original stuff has been retained.
@Ranjit : Although I have no religious beliefs, I am a person who pursues philosophy and searches for answers for the questions that arise out of my introspection. However, Krishna themes are very special to me since it invokes an unexplainable love in my heart.
@Priya : As you said, there are questions which run deeper. And in our pursuits of material pleasures, we should not become insensitive to the questions that arise within our mind abut their value. Thanks.
@Nanda : Thank you Nanda ! I am not sure if we can upload all of shankarabharaNam but we will do as much as we can !
@Subbu : Thanks ! Yes the next will be a lot faster. 2 songs have been finished and awaiting release.
@Shampak: Thanks for dropping by and listening even though you have no familiarity with the language. But be assured – both Meera and I are also not very familiar either !
@Srividya : Thanks for your dropping by. And thanks to you for bearing with my absent mindedness.

@Sushane : Thanks !
@Tara : Thanks ! For some reason any project that we(as in you and me) are involved seem to get stalled. Hopefully we will work something to completion soon.

Soothing rendition with the tabla loop and pleasing to the ears.
Liked your gamakams Meera, however the sharp turns in some places would have added more beauty. This sytle was laid-back and soothing however.
Murali … pleasing tone but not sure if the sruthi was perfectly in sync as I felt micro offs in places like 2:29 where the weaving of the tune was not perfectly in sruthi. Also think your tone could have been higher to match that of Meera’s. Nice work nevertheless and overall outcome commendable.
Cheers.

Again meera your apogee cuts the mix superbly……nice to hear your youthfull voice in this so much used to listen song……Murali I can see your cinematic binding in this song……some sangathis you have improved upon are good and very attractive ,but more leaning towards cinema kind of improves. Nothing harms the sense of the song anyway.

No harm Murali ……even spb has the same attitude in any classical numbers given to him…….this means a classical singer can get rid of that sambar and vadu manga ( or may be vatha kuzhambu and sutta appalam )effect with some common sense and intense try on mimicing when rendering other genre……but the vise versa is a tough job as we havent got that sathagam in a proper way….we will still keep mimicing a vatha kuzhambu with our chenna kurma but with all that aroma ……it will still show up in some way……habits habits.

I was delighted. Lord Sreekrishna’s idol was carried from Dwaraka till Guruvayur by Guru Brihaspathi and Vayu Deva. They did it with a lot of care. In a similar manner both of carried the song from start till end. I am glad that I heard this version of yours. infinity out of infinity just because the song struck a chord :-)….
I think the raaga for manasa sancharare was composed….is used in a malayalam film song also aathma vidyalayame….:-D

Rahul

Rahul : Atma vidyalame just seems to be more like a malayalam alternative lyrics for maanasa sanchare re from what I heard from you.

Hello Meera/Murali,
well sung by both Murali and you. However, sticking to the original sangatis would have been better and suited your ethereal voices. While I am not an expert, I want to point out that at some places, the clarity of notes could be better. G3 in the descending is the differentiator of this from Shuddha Saveri. For e.g., I see it being glided over, around 2:40 – 2:50 or so.
