Woh Sarphiri Hawa - (Hariharan Ghazal cover - Semi Unplugged)
Woh Sarphiri Hawa - (Hariha... Lyrics & Chords
I am a diehard fan of Hariharan’s ghazals. Here is my humble attempt of this beautiful ghazal from the album Waqt Par Bolna which has some wonderful songs with contemporary orchestration. I have used a minus track and as a result the BGM behind the vocals is almost fully destroyed and so this sounds more like a semi-unplugged version :).
I have tried my best with respect to diction but I am sure some words could be improved. Look forward to your feedback.

Kumar…That was a nice one… I felt you have done very good justice to the original…and then getting to the nuances in Hariharan’s Ghazals is not all that easy…:) The harkat at ‘SAR’ and ‘PHIRI’ and the similar harkat at many other places needed more perfection…tough one it is…
Overall appreciate the effort…

Hi Kumar,
I like Hariharan ghazals too and way back in 1988 or therabouts I bought a couple of his ghazal tapes and was totally entranced by his own ghazal compositions, spending many a night with earphones plugged into my ears until my earlobes started to melt!.
Nice singing by you and admire your passion to sing such ghazals. Of late I am not really up to date with all of HariJi’s ghazals so I took the time to listen to the original of this one too. Thanks for bringing it to light with your rendition which was nice.
You have a nice voice and have sung it well. Would have liked it to be a bit softer I think and with a better flow but then we are mere mortals so will not impose that on you!. Admired your passion and talent in this one.
What I feel about ghazals is that, it is not really about the music alone … one has to imbibe the genre so that it is like talking a language!. Of course a strong understanding of Urdu is also required to bring the expression and flow along with it. There is a lot of comfort factor involved in rendering ghazals that reach the hearts of the audience. With movie songs we can get away with a copy rendition, but not with ghazals I feel.
By the same token, I do not like each and every HariJi’s tamil movie renditions as it is heavily influenced by his ghazal style and does not suit all songs in tamil, not to mention his diction especially in earlier tamil songs was not up to the mark. They used him for his sheer musical talent but at the expense of tamil expression. His sheer voice and musical talent made up for it nevertheless.
Given the above, I think your rendition is admirable but to my ears the roundedness, flow and feel factors are sort of missing even from my layman’s point of view. Your voice stands out and that is nice but honestly speaking ghazals of these types are a different depth all together.
Liked it and admired your voice more.
Cheers.

Beautiful singing, Kumar. I am not familiar with this HH Ghazal, but really liked your attempt. I agree with Arvind about ghazals in general – something about them just hard to reproduce what the original singer was thinking. Harkats are so non-linear and kudos to you for doing this!

@ Kumar …. great attempt… not at all easy to sing ……it’s easier to render a Jagjit singh or Pankaj udhas ghazal but not a Hari ji one … enjoyed it very much… “padaa” had more of carnatik flavour than hindusthani… on the whole very creditable effort…

Adina, Swati & Shaniruh, thanks for the favs.
NVKji, glad you liked it, coming from a ghazal expert means a lot to me. Yeah, the harkats are tough, did the best I could :-).
Arvind, as always appreciate your deep and insightful comments. Glad to know that you also have dwellved into the treasure chest of Hariharan’s ghazals. Agree with you on his early Tamil songs too. Your view point about singing ghazals is absolutely true, it is like learning a new language altogether and needs a lot of adaption in style at a very fundamental level. I listen to this genre a lot and am constantly tempted to sing several of them. Hopefully, will get more convincing as I try more :-). Appreciate your candid feedback, that is what is needed for further improvement.
Kaushick, thank you for the pointer. Will pay more attention to it.

Beautifully sung Kumr – and many of the sangatis and nuances came through shining.
Arvind has summed it all up so well in terms of the challenges of Hariharan’s ghazals – the conversational aspect of the singing is tough to juxtapose with the gaayaki involved. I agree with his pointers on the subtleties.
Immensely enjoyed your rendition. Great work

Kumar!!! Have listened to a couple of Hariji’s ghazals and I just got bewildered on giving many listens to the same song… I mean the subtleties, depth, roundedness, feel, soul – everything fall in tandem… I really can’t comment on this masterful venture to Ghazals… I felt you were a bit conscious not to leave any of the finest details… But as said, they talk to us through ghazals which was kinda missing in this… Pardon me if I am wrong as I am completely a newbie to this genre… Relished this cover and do keep covering more ghazals… Thanks for transporting us to trance… :)
Thanks,
