Rama Katha Ganalayam - Bharatham
Rama Katha Ganalayam - Bhar... Lyrics & Chords
This song, from the movie Bharatham (1991), combined Raveedran Maash’s composing genius with KJY’s powerful vocals and a heart wrenching picturization with Mohanlal giving one of his best performances. Kaithapram has penned the beautiful lyrics.
Apparently, the shooting of this song was done using Raveedran’s raw vocal version of the song recorded on spool tape and as the song was being picturized in Kerala, the final version of the song was being recorded at about the same time in KJY’s voice in Chennai.
The song fetched KJY one of his many national awards for best male vocalist, Mohanlal bagged the national award for best actor and Raveendran Maash received the national special jury award for music direction.
I have tried this tough song in a hope to stretch myself and also shift away a bit from the softer melodies that I typically attempt. It can be also be classified as an act of sheer arrogance and greed but I like the song too much :-).
Need to mention that singing the second charanam (starting at about 4:07) in a single stretch was virtually impossible for me. So I have done it in two stretches – the swaras from 4:07-4:27 in one stretch and 4:27-end of the song in another.
As always, welcome your constructive feedback.
Thanks,
Kumar.

Kumar! Fabulous pick and what a movie – stupendous performance by Mohanlal and one of those near perfect movies in all aspects.
Your liking for the song and the feel stood out all through. Excellent singing. All the descends espec were done very very well with very good clarity of the notes. Thought the swaram portion to be very well done too. If I were to be super critical – the aaaa stretch at :29 , timing of first few lines in the aaranyakandam stanza, diction of a few words like kadtha/sukham/dhoopa ,strength of your voice at the lowest note , the last but one raaama (the first high one and the rest were brilliantly done btw) can be refined further. But what a wonderful take , Kumar. Congratulations for nailing this toughie!

When I saw this notification this morning, I knew I had to start the day with this. Kudos for attempting this tough song.Your voice was crystal clear and couldn’t be a better fit for this song.Excellent rendition, the Ramaa at the end was fantastic and all the descends were so smooth.
Raveendran Maash-what a composer! Being born and brought up in Chennai, I was only exposed to Raveendran Maash’s work much later, and I always wondered why he hadnt gotten any recognition at the National level. Thank you for the little tid-bit about the recording of this song and thank you for treating us to this beautiful song.

You have done full justice to the song. Brilliantly rendered by you. I appreciate your right up regarding breath control. Not a big person to advice, but as a friend, have you ever tried Kharaz practice in the morning. It really improvises the breath controle:)

Vinod, thank you so much for listening and leaving your feedback. Much appreciated.
Suri, very glad you found this to be good. Will have to learn the A.pallavi again to get the right timing cues. Appreciate your feedback.
NVKji, very happy to see your feedback on my attempt. Glad you liked it.
Radhika, yeah, great movie indeed. Thank you so much for your detailed feedback and pointers for improvement. About the diction, I was too busy rationing my breath so could not pay as much attention to the diction part :-). Glad you enjoyed my attempt.
Nirmala, paattu ishtapettadhil vaLare sandhosham. Thank you.
Priya, Yes, Raveedran indeed created several magical songs in the short time he was with us. Too bad he left us prematurely. Thanks so much for listening and very happy that you liked my attempt.
Vishak, long time no hear :). Happy to see your feedback buddy.
Latha, Thank you so much.

dear Kumar, excellent attempt on a very tough song!! you really deserve a very big appreciation for showing your ‘muscles’ for covering such a song in this perfection :)
as others have pointed, the only noticeable flaw was the timing issue in the anupallavi.
this cover is a treasure in Muziboo!!

First off, a Huge Kudos to you, Kumar for tackling this roller-coaster in Shubhapantuvarali! (you nailed the r \g/ r S oscillation in your alaapanai). Fluidly sung, Swarams/jathis, alaaps, aakarams and you really showed your calibre in this song. Donno the nuances of this song, so no pointers as such, but will second the suggestion for kharaj practice with pranayama in Sa.
Fav’ing it for learning this!
