Evergreen song and liked it guys. It was a good showing with adherence to the tune very well and both of you pulled it off well, Kumar especially.
Having said that here are my observations:
- Uthara, your opening humming is not aligned with the beat as per what the composer intended. Listen to the original and you will note the differences in what landing note hits the 1st beat of the cycle. You have done it differently, although not noticeable to most, it would have sounded much better if you had done it the right way. The rest of your delivery was good in most parts but you lack the filmi touches and modulations … it is not just enough if we render it “right” … there is marked difference in singing film songs as opposed to classical songs. Not many can traverse both comfortably … it is a real art and the voice also has to be honed. I also felt that your voice was not very malleable in this song for you to easily give the endearing elements necessary. I think your voice may not have been at its optimum when you recorded. Nice rendition overall as you did not have any obvious blemishes of big magnitude.
Kumar … I liked your tone in this and you did a good job as usual in your contained smooth voice. I thought places like “Aayudam”, “Oonjalaam”, “Kaaviyam” were a bit overly stressed with extra gamakams which was not necessary … it took away the effect on the word and brought in a bit of excess brigas which was not necessary at all. I would have loved for you to keep such places still romantic but well defined with embellishment. I think you need to think about more style for a better projection of your gifted voice and musical talent. Otherwise was great and you were quite precise in your singing. Enjoyed this lovely number.

Kumar: Thank you for singing this with me.
There is a short story behind this song selection. In a muziboo meet, we were doing a medley based on kaapi raagam and this song was Kumar’s choice for that raaga. That inspired me to try this song some day. I found a k-track and asked Kumar if we could do that and he readily agreed. He has sung this very well and also taken the trouble to mix this to make it sound good. Thanks for all that Kumar and looking to do many more songs with you.
Thanks to everyone for taking some time to listen to this and providing constructive comments. As Arvind said, transitioning from classical to film or any type of song is an art. Some are naturally gifted to do that but I am neither well trained in classical (though I consider this my comfort zone) nor good at such transitions (don’t know if I ever will) but I will try. For now, I am singing the songs that I like to keep my passion alive. :))

Beautiful song pick, Uthra and Kumar! Really enjoyable, melodious rendition both of you.
Uthra – your smile came across. Have so many song ideas for future jamming… Jaadiyil was perfecto!!
Kumar – soothing as ever. Really liked “Kaaviyam”. question on the pronunciation of “Draakshai” is it “Draatshai” or pronounced the Sanskrit way? Our next cover – Tamil now!
Loved it,
-Sudha

Kumar a little late here, not familiar with the original so cant comment on the nuances. You and Uthra – did a great job with this cover….felt very soothing to the ears. Uthra kudos for the higher registers and Kumar ….you sounded very effortless with those gamakams……liked it.

Kumar & Uthra!! Awesome pick and all the songs from this movie including this one were done as stereo recordings for the very first time in tamil cine industry…
Uthra!! Sounds refreshing to listen to you after a very long time… Guess you had enjoyed a lot while rendering as your smile smiles at us in this cover… :) And I agree with your remarks on transitioning from classical genre to cine-light… But I personally feel it is how you understand the song and present it with all the ingredients intact… Such an inhibition doubting our own capabilities will impede us from delivering the best… You are special in a unique way and keep telling this to yourself… :) I need not tell this as you must be aware of this… Just wanted to end this note with a message that you sounded very effervescent in this, never as before… Great output… Keep them coming… :)
Kumar!! Another KJY number from you… :) Delectable cover and this was the song which actually nurtured my hopes to post my songs in the blog world… Sukumar and Sowmya have rendered this song a few years back and I happened to listen to their cover even before knowing them… Very nice presentation… Thought you could have exuded that peppiness with an extra iota, that the melancholic shades aboriginal with your voice would have got subdued… Best melodies are born from melancholies… Right?? :) That was just my observation… Enjoyed this rendition very much… Would love to listen to an energetic solo number from you very soon… Good Luck!!!
Thanks,

Uthra’s voice hearing for the first time and she has a sweet voice and liked the way she sung with a smile throughout.
Kumar….you sounded great with those extra improvisations from the original, though different….it was indeed pleasing to the ears…

Kumar, Uthra – delightful song. Though both of you did a really good job.
Uthra- thought this to be your best cine song till date wrt clean singing, recording and mixing. Good going, Uthra. The smile in your singing and the jadayil stood out.
Kumar- you did extremely well too. The glides were a pleasure to listen. Only improvement i felt is the consistency in feel into the charanams especially, but there were many spots where you were very good too.

Kumar/Uthra,
great singing guys! And I am not going to compare and contrast your voice quality to the original track :)- for the simple reason that every voice brings something unique to the table. IMHO, perfect sruthi alignment, good pronunciation, understanding and presenting the feel of the song and of course good voice control/quality is what really matters. Uthra – On that same note, you may not sound like S.Janaki (which I don’t see a reason why you should even try and
mimic) but you have a unique and great voice! Kumar – Needless to say, superb singing!
