Jo very good attempt. you have done a good job.
IMHO in the original shankar mahadevan (with due respect to him) should not have been the singer as his malayalam pronounciation is not so perfecct, as it sounds like a tamili brahmin singing with pronounciation like ‘aaSHa’ etc.

The portion ‘Azhakaai nee thulumbunnu’ is simply superb !I think you have missed some important sangathis…‘Ishtam koodi ennum…ennum.’The second ennum has a sangathi.The sangathi you tried is only in the first pallavi of the original.’Ennum’in other portions of the original have a different sangathi.
Another one is in the second repetition of ‘Kodamanjin thazhvarayil….’

Jo, as many have commented I also believe Shankar Mahadevan was a very bad choice for this song. The lack of softness and bad pronunciation spoiled the charm of the song. There are so many excellent singers in Malayalam for whom this song would have been a cakewalk, and it’s a shame that still the foolish frenzy for singers from bollywood and tollywood reigns over our producers! The film and the music but has stood out. And Jo, I heard the original again. Seems there are many slips by the “pro” singer. Some of the nitpicks are 1)Swanthamayi sounded odd and awkwardly sung every time and not smooth. 2) Pitching problems 3) lack of flow in singing
:)He is an exceptional a singer who basically sings songs in high pitches. Songs in lower scales do not suit him as his voice does not easily reach the lower notes and is uncomfortable. So he has tried to produce extra loudness artificially which has taken away the softness of the song :) Selection of the right singer is very important for a song. My pick would be definitely P. Jayachandran for such songs!
And Jo, don’t know why but this song seems so similar to “Sree Raagamo” by Sarath :)
Your voice and singing has compensated some of these defects so well in your own style. Liked it immensely :)

Pradip: Rightly said Pradipetta. The other song from the same movie, sounded like a disaster to me! Especially the part which Shruthi Rao (?) sings “Manaaaassum” for “Manassum” in that duet with KK was really bad. It didn’t really make any sense to me why KK was chosen for that song. Shankar Mahadevan is the best singer of the year and many who had commented about him doesn’t know that he got state award for MAADAMBI, even surpassing Yesudas. You should have the heart to accept which is good. Also, KK is a malayali. He’s from Thrissur, Kerala. Although he made it big in north, he had a desire to sing in malayalam in his mothertongue.

I challenge any one who had commented bad about shankar mahadevan to sing this song to perfect.

I have known Shankar Mahadevan from his childhood days and have been following his music….I am an ardant fan of his now. Even I echo Pradip’s comment. Shanker is exceptional in the higher scales, but this song could have been rendered by some other singer…with exceptional low range.

True Jo. A singer like K.K who is a national figure, should have got a better song, a solo for sure when being introduced in Malayalam, that too his mother tongue for the first time. Nevertheless many of the singers though exceptional singers murder the malayalam language and we “kind hearted” malayalees gift them awards for doing so :)

Music crosses all barriers and is highly appreciated. Well, personally feel Jo’s singing surely swings to give the melodious blend to perfection.

I hate to rate any kind of music for music is beyond figures and scores.

I happen to be a Malayali and hence need to write a few lines here else I don’t like to write such comments. We come to listen to music and have no prejudices towards anyone on board here.

Truly said Mr. Nambiar and Mr. Somasundaran they could have chosen another singer for this particular song.

At the same time we do appreciate Shankar Mahadevan’s singing in higher pitches.

When there is a diction problem a non-Malayali will not be in a position to point out the variability which a Malayali can grasp.

Hence always one who knows the language and also the meaning of the song can always express the best of emotions and there will be apt pronunciation. Hence, one needs to have the fluency of the lang. to give the best feel.

Thanks Jo for giving us some nice music.

@Kamal – Please don’t compare KJY he is a fan of millions and has an incomparable heavenly voice.
I personally attend most of his concerts staying in NY city.
Further every musician is good in his territory which the other cannot dominate.
No singers are alike – this again depends on the structural make up of the Vocal Cords which no one can alter.
As much as you feel Shankar Mahadevan is a award winner of the year.

KJY surpasses himself with his humility and divine voice since decades crossing borders in his versatile flow of music. His music is par excellence.

@Jo – sorry, to write this as I am a die hard fan of KJY for his music is divine.

Kamal – Shankar, like many others have pointed out here, is an exceptional singer. No doubt. But just because he received a state award in Kerala doesn’t make him “the best” singer. If you are a Malayalee and know the industry politics, you would soon lose your interest in this whole award game as the politics in the movie and music industry is very evident, even in the outer layer. Plus, every singer who has made an identity of their own has a distinct feature in his/her voice and that would suit certain songs well and wouldn’t suit certain songs as well. I think that is what the others who commented here were trying to point out. They were not saying that Shankar Mahadevan is a bad singer, but just that he wasn’t the right choice for this particular song. Like how we feel some actors do not fit some roles in the movies. As simple as that.

As for me, I am not in competion with anybody. At least not in anyway with the biggies like KJY or Shankar Mahadevan!! I am just an aspiring singer who is not trying to make himself sound like Shankar Mahadevan or KJY but myself, and trying to beat my last performance with every new post. :-)

Haven’t listened to the original one. But love this version of yours.
I know people talk about ‘other’ singers singing in native language. Looks Tamil/kollywood trend has followed into Mollywood too.
Udit Narayans tamil songs are best example of such language torture :) but if MD/producers want it, that’s how it goes.
But the point here is as long as singer delivers the song along with right diction it shouldn’t be a problem.

Hi Jo, I am really really impressed with ur version, thou i am from Chennai,my parents are from Nagercoil, so i do have a little hold of the Malayalam language, NOT close to theirs, the difference is very obvious in the pronunciation of words when compared to the original track, some of the comments above HAVE convinced me that the Music Director shud have chosen a singer from Kerala (perhaps u !!) instead of Shankar Mahadevan(with due respect). Hi Jo, great voice !! You have sung beutifully, except some minor flaws here and there. To point out one, the ‘sangati’ in ‘thaazhvarayil’ in the charanam, I think is rendered differently by Sankar. This is my favorite song too, like ‘kangal irandaal’. Good job, keep it up !!

sorry to debate here as iam new to this community however cudnt stop commenting coz of 1) being shankar mahadevan’s true fan specially after this song and
2) hearing such a lovely version from joseph…

i dnt agree to the comments someone posted dat this song doesnt suit to shanakar mahadevan… rather i wud say it was just coz of his magic, the song came to be such popular

P.S: a song never gets popular if the singer wouldn’t have suited the song, the composer of the song knows the right thing better than the few people commented here)
