Instrumental - Mridangam accompaniment by Hemanth for Priya's Bhajan
Instrumental - Mridangam ac... Lyrics & Chords
2009 March 21 Live -
I was exchanging posts with Naqvi guru ji regarding exposure to instruments. I thought I should share my mridangam (South Indian Percussion) accompaniment / recording from the past….
This Bhajan (Sri Ram) was recorded during a rehearsal for a Holi-celebration gig at Dallas. The lead singer Priya was untrained for many years when she attempted this and had asked me to accompany her.
I am a novice to intermediate level mridangist who has had formal lessons for a couple of years during childhood, and have resumed lessons for a couple of years recently as well. This recording was my first mridangam accompaniment ever. Haven’t had a chance to accompany or record subsequently. Karaoke singing seems to have taken over prominence :-) !
This was also very early stages for my music recording attempts. I seem to have recorded Priya’s vocals as RIGHT side and my percussion as LEFT side of the recording….
Nevertheless, hope you will enjoy this…. Happy holidays again, and apologies once again for catching up with you all’s participation a bit slowly….
Warm regards,
Hemanth

Hemanth I have heard live performance with Mirdangam and this instrument fascinated me for its typical sound. You seem to have played nicely. I like this upload. I not only focussed on your Mirdangam playing but the vocals also that were very nice. I did sensed the Right-Left you mentioned but it was good. I am not very much into percussion but I know for sure some of our Hindustani percussion need tuning to match with the root chord of the song, especially if no other accompaniment is played. So how were your hands after playing….little sour I guess….Lol. Enjoyed it.

Guru ji, Many thanks :-) ! You are absolutely correct…., mridangam also needs tuning with the root chord of the singer. I learnt this only after this rehearsal & subsequent stage performance :-) !
This tuning process appears to be a tedious one, and seems it requires quite some practice before one can get a decent hang of it :-)….
Hope it did not sound too off scale or something in this recording, compared to Priya’s vocals….
Many thanks & warm regards,
Hemanth

Hi Hemanth ji,
This is good but I think the mridangam tuning needs to be done as you rightly mentioned above…:)

Hi Hemanth
Wonderful rendition by you both. You have played the mrudungam really well. Wish the recording had both percussion and vocals in L+R.
I felt that the mrudangam needed a little more tightening.
Will like to see more of your percussion skills in times to come!! :)
Cheers!!

Dear Sunil bro, Giri bro, Latha ji, & Jivan bro,
Many thanks for visiting and for your kind encouragement. Hope you are all having a relaxed holiday season with your family and friends. I am having a fab time reuniting with my family after a long break. I will look forward to catching up soon with your newer uploads….
@Jivan bro,
Very true…. Mridangam is indeed played quite religeously in TamilNadu…. This percussion instrument seems to be indigenous to the Indian sub-continent, and was probably widely used all over India. Tabla seems to have taken over prominance subsequently in the Northern regions and in the Hindustani classical music arena…. Would love to try playing Tabla someday…., but it appears so dauntingly different from the Mridangam :-)!
Thank you all and happy holidays….

Hemanthji,
I consider you a personality with multy qualities who always say yes for any task. @ chanel effect I can’t get may be some reason but the first performance on mridangam I liked. Good fingers control with speed & softness. Liked the variety.

Even not tuned enough percussion gave a different taste here…. and her voice in the background was like someone praying to God and your percussion upfront…… lovely combination bro…. keep sharing like that.

Dear hemanth,
I am not conversant with carnatic music so unable to say anything in reg to ur mridangam. On the whole the singer has given a good renditon and ur accompaniment follows her singing with a soft approach thereby reflecting the divinity of the song.
good wishes,
