I just wanted to find out what all of you use for mixing. Once we find the top 5, we can have one representative for each software making a small demo video to help others.

Thanks a ton George again for starting this thread. Promises to be very helpful for people who are learning to mix their own songs. Well, I will join in the bandwagon. I use multiple softwares but I am still in the learning stage. The list of softwares i use are as follows,

1. Cakewalk Sonar Producer Edition 8.0
This is the Latest in my collection. I find it very easy to work with. I will volunteer if someone want me to come up with a demo video. This software is industry standards and a lot of big music engineers use it to do professional mixing and mastering. It has some fantastic presets for Vocals and can be use to MIDI recordings too. Very versatile and easy to use.

2. Cool Edit Pro (I use this one only for some reverb settings which suit my vocals)

3. Adobe Audition (I use this cos there are some fantastic presets for EQ’s, again suiting my vocals)

4. Audacity (I just use this one for final syncing and to adjust tempo of the Karaoke track and the recorded vocals. I am sure the other softwares also has a lot of scope to do this but I have never bothered to look into them. Will surely look into them so that if anyone is looking for answers on that fron, i can provide some suggestions and ways to do it)

Well, these are the stuff I use to mix my Vocals for solos and duets too. I am still learning and my skills are not as good as George but with every song I learn something new by trying something new.

Let me know if i can be of any help if you find me worth for any of your mixing questions. I promise if i know it ill help and if i dont then we all can do some search and come up with an answer :)

You can email me at ajrockaj@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Regards,
Rahul/AJ

AJ,
If you were to pick one of these (your favorite), what would it be?

Cakewalk Sonar for sure because I use it for 90% of my mixes. The rest 10% adds up amongst the others.

Hope that helps.

The only one I know and use is Audacity. Will be great if someone does a demo of that too! Great initiative, George.

Hi I use

1.Ableton live 7.0 -for most recordings and effects-It has some very good tools for creating your own sounds and presets.Has very good customised presets for different instruments which provides a fantastic starting point

2.I also use Sony acid Studio for some effects.

3.And good old audacity for mp3 rendering…I particularly liked the noise removal factor here….unlike pro s/w which need threshold frequency to be inputted…audacity allows you to let it know the background noise thro a bar, understands it and cuts only that noise w/o shaving the vocals/inst.

Subbu.

Here is a valuable interview from A.R.Rahman from logic pro 8 website I am almost sure lots of people havent seen this….in this rahman shortly explains his techniques with logic pro 8 on page 2….read it and love it…

http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/action/arrahman/

I use logic pro 8 on my macbook the bottom line macbook….which I found amazing after using PC for years…. I have used somany softwares before now just logic pro8 and some free online plugins ….these allows my thought to be on recording so quickly…… Also use Reason 4 for more sounds and layering as this is very cpu efficient on synths…..and its rewire compliant with logic pro 8…… logic trick here : not covered anywhere…… Recently I found my sound is getting more complicated and demanding so I had to use two instances of same logic project opened with different names…..then I can multiply my synth and sampler counts up…the way mac and logic handles two project is different from how a pc handles it….when you click a project screen logic frees up memory and cpu by savings everything temporarily on hard drive …..and loads the screen that has been clicked….you can work on that screen and bounce as audio to other project ….when you click the other project screen …logic loads everything back from temp folder alon with bounced audio….why this is good ? this is too good for somebody running out of processing power, who wants everything to happen in real time.

Hi,
Initially I had Nuendo, but I was unfamiliar with most of the things other than recording, later used Acid pro 6.0 for recording sometime. Still use it alternatively with Audacity. Vidya helped me download sum plugins for Audacity which threw some light for mixing and surviving on it. Hoping to get Nuendo once again and learn the art of mixing.
First and foremost, I believe the recorded voice file should sound perfect even before mixing. So miles to go!

Cheers:)
Ramya
