Tere Mere Milan with Tara Balki (From Abhimaan)
Tere Mere Milan with Tara B... Lyrics & Chords
I deleted the previous upload for reasons most of you can guess (and if you cant, its not worth knowing). I am posting the comments (most of em anyway) and the description below.
This song needs no introduction. A timeless classic from the movie Abhimaan originally sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.
Tara and I worked extra hard on this one and hope we’ve done this song justice. I would like to throw out a disclaimer that we havent tried to copy the song as is and have introduced a few variations here n there hopefully without impacting the true beauty of the song.
Credits:
Originally sung: Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar
Music Director: S D Burman, Charanjit Ahuja
Covered by: Tara Balki, George Kuruvilla

George and Tara …this song is very close to my heart and you guys did a wonderful job with this. George I am glad that you finally sang a kishore da song in your own style…we need more of these from you…Tara was very good too, felt Tara should have sung this more freely. The expressions were just awesome…loved it to the core.
Full marks from me guys …keep up the good work !!

George, good singing man – liked it. Glad to see you attempting some old classics :-). Felt voice modulations could be better to improve on feel. Some portions could be sung with a slightly softer voice.
Tara, you sang well also. Thought your usual flair was some what lacking though – singing was kind of subdued.
Enjoyed listening to this song from the two of you. The song choice was a pleasant surprise.

surprising and pleasant, but I thought this was outside your comfort zone, not from a singing perspective, but from a ‘mood’ one. I thought you cut back on your natural style and tried to morph yourself, muting your distinctive tonality in the process.
Your singing is still wonderful in this genre, but I’d rather hear you sing songs you like and believe in … Aankhein Teri, which simply blew me away, for example
just my 2 cents :)

Georgy – Man, i just want to appreciate ur effort in singing old classics….But honestly, I dint like it very much…It seems the expression was lacking in places, some harkatein, like KHILAYEGI was not upto the mark……probably its because ur voice has a different texture…and also u dont sing songs in this genre….as we all knew that u r a fantastic singer, i believe u should stick to ur genre….For experimentation, its very good…See i believe its all abt selecting songs to ur voice…even u pointed out that to me sometime back….not every singer can sing every song….like Rafi saab cannot sing Kishoreda’s songs and vice versa….so hope u dont mind my honest views….
Tara – i like ur voice in this song, very pleasant…
Overall, good rendition of an old time classic…keep going guys…

i liked this rendition for precisely the reason NV didnt, this also highlights george’s method of operation. he doesnt try to ape the original artiste but tries to sing each song his own way. u see these 1000s of desi aspiring vocalists who try eat talk walk dance and even fart like their idols (kishore kumar spb whatever). its refreshing to see someone who doesnt.

That was a nice attempt of this classic song….even if one does not try to ‘copy’ the original singer one has to try and copy the ‘mood’ of the song along with expressions …i felt George you could improve in that aspect…expressions could have been better…diction could have been better and murkis were not attempted …i am happy that you attempted something out of your ‘genre’ ….i really believe everyone should try to be ‘versatile’ and your attempt must be appreciated :) If you keep singing such classic oldies you will surey get better :) Tara – you have done a good job but i have heard you sing better :) Keep singing guys :)

Hi George,
Great Attempt. I appreciate your attempt to sing this difficult song and that too a kishoreji song , I remember you telling me you don’t listen to Kihsoreji songs much . Nice rendition, however the song is devoid of harqats done by the original singers. I am not talking about copying the original singers noone can do that , I am talking of the composition, the song, the ingredients of the song that made it beautiful.
I felt Tara Balki was uncomofortable through out…
Would rate it 3/5 ….Both of You could have done far better…

thanks for all ur feedbacks:) We took the song damn serious… and gave our best shot… I certainly did to my satisfaction…I am happy and thought its come out pretty neat:) I noted all ur points for my improvement.
I agree with Sowmitra… i wud rather try singing similar type of songs to get better instead of sticking to my genre.
“these harqats and mukris” i did closely listen to lata’s singing and its how I perceived the song… i delievered that way… If i dont get it exact, i try to be close… thats my way of rendering a song… otherwise i will end up recording nothing:) I was quite comfortable thru out otherwise I usually dont try the song…
May be the song sounds more original than a copy :) I haven’t listened to Kishore or Lata’s songs closely so really dont know their style and no harm trying out such songs as long as it doesn’t affect the original beauty… may be it did for some… i do respect ur feelings… I personally think George did a brilliant job and carried the song beautifully. 5/5 for his singing and expressions:)

Tara … you have a beautiful voice. you sounded totally professional … try for indian idol :)… one thing …you need to sustain the ending notes a bit more in parts of the song.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. Being a Kishore Kumar number and knowing how my fellow muzibooans feel about his work, I kinda expected the onslaught.
Now coming to the singing, like Tara mentioned I think we gave it our best shot and are extremely satisfied with the outcome. It definitely doesnt sound like the original and is not meant to be identical. As far as the harkats and mukris go, I dont agree with Rakesh and Soumitra that it is “devoid of harkats” or that “mukris were not attempted”. Both are there but not like its done in the original. We have done it in the way we interpreted them. I am sure for Kishore Kumar purists, this is a crime, but thats the beauty of music… we all interpret a song differently. I have never enjoyed trying to nail every variation as done in the original (and this is true for all my songs) and this song is no exception. I am extremely glad to have worked with Tara on this as she always give it a 110%. For a layman like me, she sounds beautiful in this song and I couldnt have asked for more.
Thanks once again to everyone and I appreciate all of you taking the time to analyze and comment on this song.
Thanks,
-George

Its been time that I have been to MUZIBOO , just came through the discussion. My feeling about the song :
1. I felt that the song can be rendered in one’s own way, if someone expects to hear the same as original, then they should go and listen to the original songs. Comparison is fine with the original song, but for that one should see the kind of singer involved in it. If there’s a new guy in the block, I would expect him\her to sing in a way where he matches the original. But with singers like George and Tara, I will expect a bit different. It’s really nice to attempt in one’s own way of rendering a song, till its in the proper pitch and doesn’t makes u forget the original. This song does reminds me the original and the style, the freshness I would expect from both calibrated singers. It’s time when people should start observing it in a professional way than comparing it to the original.
2. I do agree that the murkhis and harkhat’s were not as perfect as the original, but were atleast attempted. If someone says, this is not the GENRE a certain singer should sing, they might be right, but I don’t mind experimenting to get a fresh thing. There are 1000’s of singers who can sing ‘like’ KISHORE DA and LATA DI . Music has no limitation until and unless someone destroys the song in itself. I din’t find u both destroying the song.
3. Coming to the point of judging the rendition, I do have few points. The song was a bit high for both of you and I did feel lack of expression in George’s voice. Tara was good expect of some note issues. Else, I like both of your voices,a little bit of happy singing will be like an additional melody to the song. U can try it again by even lowering the pitch of the song.
Peace!!!

ayaalde oru hartaalum makkiriyum :)…KK (may he R.I.P) himself must be squirming in his grave after watching all the action here…i know how hard both of u worked on perfecting this, n i think you’ve done this song justice and ‘ve made it your own…for me, originality is key, and you both have achieved just that…besides, if you guys tried to sound like KK and Lata, this wouldn’t be a “rendition”…it’d be an “imitation”…n we all know how bland and worthless imitations are…so keep it real, i say…n continue treading the same course, cuz it’s the right one
Love,

@Anirban, Subbu – Thanks for your feedback guys. Appreciate it.
@Sunny – Thanks for being honest Sunny. You are probably right about feeling constricted and it might have to do with the fact that I was concentrating too much on diction and did not sing as freely as I normally would. Like they say, you cant sing em all. Maybe Kishore Kumar is not for me!

Hey bro
Bro you have sung it beautifully however sometimes when your used to singing same kinda stuff /Genre for a long time , you cant change your style all of a sudden . I am sure other singers wouldnt do any better than you , cos the song itself is tough… When I sang " Sau Bar janam lenge " I had to change my style of singing to reach the higher notes in the song, after that I was finding it difficult to sing kishore ji numbers…. I am looking forward to hear some more kishore songs from you bro since I cannot comment on songs u generally upload lols :) ……Dont say that…I am talking about " Kishore Kumar is not for me " thing…

Whether, you have tried to sing as the original or whether you have tried to sing it on your own lines, does not matter as long the basic aspects of a song such as diction (not accent), pitching, emotion, perfection of whatever harkaths and murkhi’s you have attempted (perfection of murkhi’s and harkaths comes by executing the expected notes in those correctly and taking care that the notes are precise however difficult or easy they might be. This comes only by regular practise)timing, flow, recording etc. are good. If these parameters are fine, then it does not matter if you have sung it as yourself, or sound similar to any singer. When it is not by natural choice and you have deliberately tried to be different then it will show in your rendition.
In this rendition I think George and Tara have done almost 90% justice to the song without any comparison to the original.
I liked your version very much, in terms of feel and all other aspects, except for some small areas where the expected plans did not reach their expected notes and so were sounding odd esp with Tara.
