I’ve always wanted to cover this song, but never mustered up the courage because of complexity in the phrasing. I finally decided to give it a go.
This was the song that brought Tracy Chapman into the limelight and also won her a Grammy.
This is storytelling at its finest. The girl in the story is forced to quit school to take care of her father, who is an unemployed alcoholic and divorced. She then leaves town with her boyfriend in the hope of a brighter future. However her dreams are shattered and her life begins to look a lot like her mothers (her boyfriend doesnt find a job and is a drunk like her father) and she falls into the cycle of poverty.
