Comments and Feedback on Songs

Just wanted to get peoples opinions and suggestions on commenting and feedback on songs. If you are the artist posting a song, what is it that you are expecting to hear back from the people who comment? What are the key areas? Does it need to be rated based on each category? Would it help if everyone follows some standard for feedback?

Hope to hear from you all!

When I post a song, I look for feedback in these main areas – Expressions, Pitch, Mixing, what you liked the most, what you liked the least and overall quality. In addition, I would like to hear about what I could have done to make it sound even better.

I think it would be nice if people could rate it on a scale of 5 or 10 in the following categories:

1. Expressions
2. Pitch
3. Mixing
4. Overall Quality

Do you think this is too much work?

In my opinion Feedback should always give a singer/composer a chance for improvement. Just saying that it’s good/bad doesn’t give any scope for the artist to make it better next time. I agree on all the four categories that you raised, but having certain standards for Feedback, naah I don’t think so. Because a feedback is something that is related to the person who is leaving it, it’s up to him/her on how he wants to react on a particular Artist’s performance. I don’t think we should restrict or suggest someone on that. But rest of the stuff you mentioned, I absolutely agree with you.

Feedback could be objective with the view to helping the artiste identifying areas of strengh or weakness and giving tips for improvement. Such feedback could be from expert listeners who are knowledgeable.

Feedback could also be a spontaneous reaction, honestly sharing whatever the listener felt after listening to the work. The listener in this case need not be an expert. This could immensely help the artiste to get the public opinion about his/her work.

Feedback to me is a sponteanous reaction after listening to a piece of work. Hence rightly said by Dhiraj, we cant have a framework around that. Feedback can even come from an ordinary listener (he or she doesnt have to be an expert – I would have to disagree with sriram here). When it comes to the mood, expressions ….there is no better judge other than the common man on the street. Since most of us here on Muziboo sing cover of film songs, sur , thal, voice throw, diction and above all the soul of the rendition ….matters to me to the most part. I agree that the feedback should contain tips for the artiste to improve with tons of encouragement….provided the artiste takes it in the right spirit and work on the improvement areas.

IMO, a good feedback should:

1. describe how the listener felt.
2. explain where the shortcomings are by citing exact locations.
3. suggest how things can be improved.

A good performer on the other hand should strive to make his rendition free of points 2 and 3 in the songs to come.

I am just a good fan of music, I tell people if I like the song or not. I am capable of just giving a one liner. Even to do that, I like the singer to acknowledge my comments (if not me individually, at least the group of people that have commented). It pisses me off if they look the other way as if I asked them for an autograph.

I agree with Arun regarding acknowledging the comments. As a matter of fact I just stopped commenting on those who dont acknowledge, so I dont get pissed off anymore :-)
