I thought of starting this thread when I was writing my yearly Goals and Objectives (for Work). One of the things we do as part of it is assess our core competencies, determine areas of improvement and then my boss tells me where she agrees or disagrees with my assessment.

I was envisioning extending this to our community. Here are some of the key points:

-The basic idea is for an artist to first assess himself/herself.
-What are your strengths and weaknesses?—Areas that you feel you are weak in and would like to improve,
- What you would consider fun projects?

-The rest of the community would then chime in and say if they agree/disagree with the artists views. In some ways, this is a reality check and helps the artist understand what others perceive of them and how it compares to what they thought about themselves.

-Every artist should start a new discussion with his/her name. The rest of us will then post feedback as replies.

I hope this turns out to be beneficial for the artist and for the audience in the long run.

Subbu,
Thanks for the comments. I totally agree that we need to get better at being more critical. But that comes with maturity and an understanding of various types of music. There is a way of being critical without offending the other person. I think Muziboo as a whole is getting better at this and will continue to get better. I have noticed on my latest uploads that people have been more critical. This is a sign that the average listener is more educated now and feels more confident at expressing his/her perceptions.

People should feel free to be critical when posting feedback on artists in this forum. That is the only way the artist can improve.

Hmmm…. right.

Apart from improving my music by constant critics, I learned reviewing from SectionZ Community interactions only.

I think I do my best in putting the right point on table, whatever it costs. So, sometime, my reviews may offend?!! :D

Let it. Its all for good. :)

Guess I have still have a long way to go, sing lot more songs, experiment more on styles, delivery, etc, improve and start understanding my own capabilities before I can do any assessments… :)
Nevertheless, finding such a discussion topic is like a target set for me, say I hope to work and find something significant enough to post here…
Just wanted to post my appreciation for the discussion though… :)

cheers

I think I really need 2 take up some classes and learn stuff properly… thinking of guitar as an option…. Of course, the mixing front always offers plenty of scope 4 learning…. :-)

Sushane- I think proper lessons aren’t always the way to go, especially if you are making original music. Experimentation and constant play can produce not only music but a personal style too!

I think my weaknesses are using my voice and wanting to record something without practicing it enough first.
