Old malayalam songs have many features which are similar to old bengali songs. Slow paced, simply orchestrated, beautiful lyrics (I cannot understand bangla though), carried soulfully by a voice with a beautiful and enjoyable vibrato and delivered expressively. This song, kaayaambu, OmalaaLe, manjalaiyil, karimukil kaattile – all give me an apparent feeling that a mallu equivalent of Manna Dey is singing.

Your rendition captured that spirit in the truest sense. I was waiting for “kaivazigaL piriyumbOL” – you delivered it with the beautiful emotive slide that KJY had delivered. What is beautifying in all your mallu renditions is the fact that you are so comfortable in the genre of Ghazals and other hindi melodies and this adds a subtle but interesting flavor.

I am a regular in your music space NVK. And BTW, please send me a mail if possible.

With my fading knowledge of Malayalam, I could understand and feel the pain in the song.

Though I have not heard this song before, I am sure you would have done justice to it! I envy your unswerving adherence to shruthi and your clear diction.

Please post more such Malayalam numbers!

I had to hear the original and then come back to post a comment on this. The original I listened to was from youtube with slightly higher pitch and tempo. I wonder if the original was like that or it was just youtube’s video quality that did that.

I liked your singing in its entirety. Wonderfully done! I liked it so much that I have taken time to point out regions where I thought you can improve. Please dont mistake me, this is just to get someone who is doing good, do better (just my two cents)

I checked back on some lines between the two

1. orumichu chernnulla karalukal verppedumbol
murukunno bandham azhiyunno

The modulation and inflection on the second line can get better.
I observe Some note changes on the second line

2. kadhanathaal thengunna hrudhayavumaayi
karakalil ala thallum oalangale

The vibration(sangati) on the end of the second line is missing.

3. Expressions were slightly more on some words and were seeming to slow down a bit.

4. Very slight and subtle diffrences that I observed between the sangatis. I had not point out this in general because a singer should not imitate exactly but should feel and get his own version of the notes, given the basics. You got that part right. But this song is so beautifully done by Yesudas that I feel any change done to it is a sin. Don’t you agree?

Also, let me request you something in general here. I feel you contain your talent a bit since you do not want to spoil the original. Please show us some NVK style in some songs. We are all only experimenting and having fun, so please show some of your own work on the song when you can. I am sure it will be greatly appreciated by fols here. If not a classic like this, select some other song to show that.

This is one of my father’s favourites…all vintage mallu songs had beautiful lyrics…and so does this one.

AYIRUM PADASRANGAL KILLUNGI ….you might want to attempt this for me :-) would love to hear it in your voice.
