Subscribe to your favorite muziboo artists in iTunes now

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

We just rolled out a very exciting feature. Now you can subscribe to music from your favorite artists on Muziboo in iTunes. Just look for the itunes image on the profile page (in stats secion next to song count) or the song page (just below the player) and click on it. You would need iTunes installed on your system.  iTunes is a free software available for Mac and Windows and for linux you can use something like rhythmbox. I think the best benefit of itunes subscription is the fact that you can listen to music on your ipod even when you are not connected to the internet!

This addition makes muziboo a great service for podcasters too specially when combined with a pro account for large file uploads (longer podcasts at high bitrate)

So happy listening. Do let us know your feedback on this feature or any other requests you have.

128 kbps streaming at Muziboo.com?

Friday, April 4th, 2008

This is mirrored from the Muziboo lounge thread that can be found here

Last few days, there has been a lot of discussion around the policy that muziboo converts all mp3 files to 64 kbps and this hurts the sound quality. We wanted to have an official thread about it and have the discussion in one place. So here it is

Why 64 kbps
When we started out, we wanted to convert the mp3 to a bitrate that

1. Can be played back over most links smoothly. We therefore chose 64kbps and also converted the sampling rate to 44.1 khz to avoid the so called chipmunk effect.
2. Gives a good preview of the song without giving away a CD quality version so we can introduce sales and people can buy the original composition and the artists can earn revenue on their music through paid digital downloads.

What now
64 kbps will remain the default bitrate on Muziboo. However there will be two more options soon.

1. Starting next month, when we have ecommerce integrated, you can buy a high bitrate version of the track. This would apply only to originals. The costs etc will be announced at a later date.

2. If you do not want to sell your music or if you want everyone to hear a 128 kbps version, there will be an option to upgrade your account and have a premium 128 kbps streaming. There will be other benefits in the premium account such as the ability to reupload a song and not lose comments etc. Again, the exact details will be announced in a couple of weeks.

Songs uploaded feb onwards will have a 128 kbps version (if you uploaded it at that bitrate or higher) by default once you upgrade. For tracks before feb, you will be able to reupload once you upgrade the account.

The basic account with the existing services will always remain free.

We are looking forward to your feedback on this.

Prateek Dayal
