Good Singing Murali. I just loved the feel……i wish i can learn that from someone….“involvement in the song”. But as Maruthi suggested….even i felt that you made a few compromises with some gamakams and those places seemed incomplete….
But that said, as i see, this was recorded in 2005. I’m pretty sure(as much as i know you) you have come a long long way now and if you attempt this song again….you will do miracles….
Keep singing….All the best…

Really beautiful—nice voice coupled with shruti and talam in place—inspiring……I have not heard the original—if you have it can you post a link, etc. I am moving this to my favorites…

Murali – am not familiar with the song, but thought it to be well taken by you. Would have liked to hear tamburu in the background.Felt a bit of nasality creep in when you sing Vedham and made you sound diff when you do that line as compared to the rest. Couldnt help smiling at the La/la of Ilaya that Subbu pointed out :) – however to my Mal ears i thought i heard iLaya right. The ease with which you traverse through the notes with precision is amazing and that too without a backing track !!.

Hello people,
Your feedback is very encouraging.
@ Rahul : The original was delivered by Yesudas in a rip-roaring fashion. Especially the charaNams. One could only wonder at this celestial singer’s breathtaking performance.
@ Maruthi / vamsi: Thanks. As I can recall, I did not make many compromises especially at 1:26. I think I just modified that portion a bit. In fact that line is sung twice with the second line being more complicated than the first and I think I did attempt the second line too. But ya, to get the ‘wholesomeness’ of KJY is difficult.
Subbu : thanks. Honestly I did not hear a la there, but if you did it may be because I did not enunciate enough.
@ Vidya : thanks. did I ‘lighten’ the song ? :)
@ Ravi : your name sounds familiar. Did you participate in paaduthaa theeyuga in Atlanta 2000 ? Thanks for your kind words.
@ Radhika Nair : Sweet revenge is it not ? :) Just kidding. I found “la/La” issues and nasality issues in you rendition and they are the ones haunting me here !! :) And, yes you are right. One of the general tendencies of the singers is to associate a slight “mm” sound with vowels like “aa”, “ee”, “E”. the words "vE"dham has an associated ghost “mm” sound with the “E” and that does sound nasal. This is another feature that I have tried to correct in recent renditions.
@Meera : Is it ? I thought we got know when I sang pramadhavanam ? Anyway thanks!
@Surya : Your consistent support is highly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi heard it again couple of times now-I dont want to be picky for its sake :)-It does not sound as clear a La as the second time to my ears…….I felt duty bound to point out this extremely rare one from you Murali……every time I hear this song but,it kinda inspires to go to the mike….but what to do I can only look at the mike and admire it :(

Murali … not sure what to say … as I am a bit bemused!. Song has no beat and it is sung in ad lib style. The original song has a good tempo accompaniment and this is absent here even in the rudimentary sense. Can be enjoyed in its raw sense but a song without a proper tempo just is a touch difficult to digest properly!. I also found that the tune and nuances differ to the original and looked to me like your own interpretation of the Maestro’s composition.
Sadly for me, this version of yours lost me in the pallavi itself!. I think you have sung some parts well but the framework is lost. Please take this in the right spirit … also an old recording so I think you will be much wiser now!.
Cheers.

I could not get or make a K track for this song when I attempted it. so, some of the dynamism in the delivery would have been lost – I agree.
But i really wonder what I have done so differently from the original to make you feel I completely lost the framework ! If by framework you mean orchestration, I do agree (obviously) it is absent. Technically, I cannot in fact match the original sangathi to sangathi, but tried my level best.
That said it was not an “interpretation” except the slight modification I made that Maruthi pointed out. If you feel I have fallen short in many places, it was not because I have “interpreted” it, but just because I was unable to match the original, unlike some other songs like “muzumadhi”, kaatrinile varum geetham", where I did sing in an interpretative style. This was just as much I could deliver based on what I assimilated and what I was able.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Murali … after hearing songs from you such as ‘Sangeethame Amara Sallabhame’ and ‘Pramadavanam’, this one falls well short in my opinion. What I meant by framework are certain cornerstones of this song namely the energetic rhythm and style of melodic delivery and the precision therein. To my ears it sounded broken up and the spirit (jeevan) was missing. Now that you mention that you have not brought in your interpretation to this song, I can only guess that you have not listened to the original close enough to assimilate it well enough. Having said that should you choose to do it now, it will be easy for you I suspect and you are very much capable of reproducing the spirit of the original from what I have heard of you in other songs. If you took a fresh approach on this song you will do it. Just my no holes barred opinion without going into excruciating details …
You are right in that the orchestration and K-track are missing which would have aided your effort a lot more, but still ….

I listened to it again……and enjoyed again :)
have a doubt on diction-In tamil generally one does not roll the lips like an “O” to pronounce words like Karunai,Kattugirai(U sound like a rolled O-listen closely to KarUnai mevum poovizhi padhayil kavidhai inbam kaattUgiraai)I think a 80% closed sound in such cases makes it sound more genuine… it may be due to the overwhelming stature of SPB and KJY who kept pronouncing it like above with their mother tongue written lyrics which became the acceptable standard.Or for classical numbers it is deliberately pronounced like that? Can some one throw light on this?I am going to listen to some TMS numbers today!

Subbu.

Murali,
One of my fav songs. Many sangathis were different from the original but sounded good. Very good effort by you. Slight slip at ‘tharumo’ at 2:16. Also felt the landing notes at ninaithathu (2:31) and vadithathu (2:38) were not perfect.
I think the lyrics are Nilavu nee Kathirum Nee (not pagalum nee)- here is a link to the original.

Its relatively tough to sing without chords or some shruti reference. You have a good breath control. Good job overall!

Hi Murali,
good effort however, you should have a shruthi for this. I would rather you not sing this without it.
And then this is a masterpiece in Gowlai ragam – prolly the only Gowlai extant in the cine world. Even St. Tyagaraja has only one Gowlai – the Pancharatna kriti! So we should be doubly careful about sedhaaram in such solid gold pieces.
Gowlai is sans Dhaivatam. At around 0:56, kATTugirAi phrase – you are doing gamakams around Da like Mayamalava Gowlai or Saveri. There is also Dhaivatam in your kaarvai from ilaya thendral kaatrinile…
Just wanted you to be sensitive about adding your flavor to such classical masterpieces.
Cheers!

Thanks lot for the contribution. But when you write in blog spot please give reliable information. This song “Vedham Nee En Iniya Naadham nee” was written by another great Tamil Poet Thiru. Puzhamaipitthan and not by Kavingar Vaali. Unless you know the lyricist name please don’t mention it… leave it blank…
