uDalin thiriyaalE - Tribute to Mother - My composition sung by Pradip Somasundaran
uDalin thiriyaalE - Tribute... Lyrics & Chords
Song : udalin thiriyaalE
Composed by : Murali Venkatraman
Lyrics : Murali Venkatraman
Singer : Pradip Somasundaran
A mother’s contribution toward’s a child’s life is immeasurable. This is a song that I wrote and composed as a tribute to my mother.
Kanakaangi is the first mELakartha or “janana” raagams. That is, it is the first among the mother ragams. It is one of my favorite ragams and I believe it epitomizes an emotional tension. My first tryst with Kanakaangi came unsurprisingly with “thom thom” of Sindhubhairavi and then followed “shree gaNanatham bhajamyaham”. There are purists who feel that this raga was artificially derived when assembling the Venkatamahi scheme but one could always argue what is natural and what is artifical. To me, kanakaangi evokes a deep feeling which ragas like bhairavi and thoDi do. It may just be a personal feeling.
Every song when conceived by the composer innately comes with the image of the voice which would sing it. The composer has a construct in his mind about the song and delivery. It is the responsibility of the composer to convey the image properly to the singer. It is only some singers that grasp the mental image of the song, polish it and take it to the next level at which point the composer sits back and just enjoys his work being savored.
I can understand how Raveendran would have felt when “souparnikamritha veechikaL” was delivered by Yesudas. When I ended up listening to Pradip’s version of souparnikamritha veechikaL I felt equally mesmerized that I ended up listening to it 10 times in a day. And I knew none other than Pradip can bring the required bhaavam for a soulful tribute to mom.
That he is a singer par excellence has already been nationally acclaimed through Lata Mangeshkar award. But what is more rewarding and pedagogical to a younger musician is his untiring effort towards precision. Precision as in clinical precision and not the engineering precision. As the lyricist, I felt my lines had come to life in his absolutely soothing, expression laden voice with appropriate emphasis on the syllables.

And chose to call its residence “garba gruham” (the womb or karuvaRai)
Oh my mother – Your greatness will never cease !
I bantered God the other day
He retorted : “You puny creature ? why are you mocking me ?”
I replied : “The universe is yours. You have infinite lifetime. But have you ever tasted the nectar of a mother’s love ?”
He felt humbled and bowed down replying : “No”

Brilliantly done. I really liked it. Vivaadhi raagas are so well suited for heavy emotions – good choice to convey the beautiful lyrics you have penned. Pradipji has completed the picture with his uniquely effective voice that can adapt itself to any genre of music. Keep up the good work.

Very Well Done Murali….! This is one among the most ‘powerful’ lyrics I have come across.
Pradip has done full justice to the meaning of the song by singing it without much sangathis, which is the right thing to do for the mood of this song.
Coming on to Choice of Raga, with this tune (wihout considering the lyrics) the picture coming on to my Mind is a ‘devotee singing in front of Idol in a temple,Praising/describing God’s greatness’. In short, tune has more of Bhakti Bhavam, which is the natural feel in Kanakangi.
Philosophically speaking :o), Bhakti can be described as one level up to the feel of love towards mother. In that angle, Kankakangi was a nice choice.
Looking forward to listening to more original compositions form you,

First of all, I am elated to see one of your own compositions being presented after such a long time!
There is something very powerful and soulstirring about this tune that made me cry helplessly. And that it should be sung with lyrics about something as pristine as Motherhood makes it even more poignant.
Pradip,as usual, has stolen our hearts!
Looking forward to more such treats from you both!

Thanks to each one of you who took their time to listen to the composition and comment and commend. Off the many steps a composer needs to take, the final step is the most crucial, which is the feedback. Your feedback helps me understand my music, your perspective and overall appeal and it means a lot to me.
Ramya : I know you have a sharp ear. Thanks for the compliments.
Sushane : Ragam is kanakangi. But ragam is a just s template. And I am flattered by your comments. Thanks. I composed and wrote at the same time. I guess it would have taken a total of half an hour.
Kumar : It is true that vivaadhi ragams have a heavy feeling. May be the “closeness” (of the swaras) produces a deep bonding ?! Roshni, Adithi, Sowmya, Arthi – It feels good that the song touched you in a deep sense. That completes my job as a composer. Tara, Rashmi, Jahnavee, George, Dhiraj, Smitha : Value your comments. And a big thanks. NVK, Jahnavee : Really speaking, there are sometimes when I get impatient with the arrangement. That is one single reason why I post some of my compositions with just voices alone. Rajesh and Vidya : If you read my description, you would have noticed that the inspiration for this song comes from “sowparnikamruta” song which had a dual personality – both bhakthi and love towards mother. I am not surprised that it shows here in my composition too. ThanksSrini S (bye bye friends)

A soulful composition Murali. To say that Pradip has sung well would be an understatement.I can see what a brilliant singer can do to a composition. With respect to the lyrics although the overall theme is good,Imho, it would have been even better had it been in a structured poetic form rather than the free form.May be it’s a style intentionally done.
Keep them coming.

Awesome (semi-classical) composition Murali. You have shown your composition flair and depth of scale in this work. My sincere appreciation and claps.
Pradip being an excellent singer, has done a good job. There is a sort of innate tremolo (oscillation) in his rendering. This prevented me from enjoying the lyrics totaly and the words were not crisp in my opinion, especially for this tune/lyrics. Otherwise he has a lovely bass tone and has sung it very well with his classical knowledge.
Kudos to you both. Claps!.

Something in the earth that always that makes you feel you are on the floor……mother is the answer after a long endless search in spirituality. You have nailled and constructed my thoughts in the lyrics , which I have wrote in musical form of birth of shiva which gives the hint of shiva is mother less in the thought levels…your lyrics rewrites it on a different angle of approach kudos ……. the way pradip has conveyed your lyrics in his expression is wordless……try to remove the words and hum it……it will still convey the lyrics( ofcourse if one has a common sense of musical relation ) the composition ………the semitonal change wherever it cries for is perfectly inserted without the stringent rules of commons melody……I totally apreciate the sense understanding the need and implementation……as the carnatic classical sense only has lead to show this ( no chords ) this sense is must to creat that minor scale down mood . Well struck murali. Its another lesson for me . It carries me to the old number " mounathil vilayaadum manasatchiyae" from the movei “nool veli” struck in raag saama sang by balamurali krishna….but this tune by you murali has jumped a leap above it. I know this is not saama though.thanks for good music,

Good song. Very well sung. Nice lyrics. I found the composition a bit stale. Coulda explored more combos. Reminds an awful lot of the great song Mouname nee basha. Well done.

Please pardon my late reply. I have been deliriously engrossed in work and other things. Have not heard a single song from muziboo for quite a while.
Aravind:
I needed a voice with extra tremolo for this particular song and Pradeep obliged it. Happy that you found the song good.
Shrikanth Kumar : Thanks.
Pradeep Barre:
It is indeed due to the depth of his voice that I asked Pradip to sing this song. Pradip’s singing is indeed a lesson for other singers to learn from.
Ganesh D:
Thanks. Seems like you enjoyed the lyrics more than the song !
Maruthi:
Thanks for your comments. It is indeed strange you and another person found this song reminding you of mounaththil viLaiyaadum – which is in completely different and unrelated raga (saama).
Narayanan:
thanks man. It was indeed fun at your place !
Vamsi:
For a person from a completely telugu background, your understanding of tamil is pretty good. The lyrics may have been a little on the literary side which is why you have found difficulties in understanding. Srujana must be knowing the meaning !
Sruajana : Thanks !
Psychuk:
The two ragams are completely different. Mouname nee basha – is set in Sama (with jeeva swarams) and Kanakangi is a ragam which has vivaadhi swarams. But, it is indeed strange that you and Maruthi both found similarities with the same song (although he mentioned the tamil version). And composition being stale – well – it is a semi-classical and without any arrangement and you are absolutely entitled to your opinion.
Murali Venkatraman said
and forgot to mention :
mouname nee basha / mounaththil viLaiyaadum itself has been adapted straight from “maanasa sanchara re”
Maruthi said
Murali, its not about the raaga itself murali……its about the genre of the composition……its the colour of the imagination…….ithu oru raagamnu solli mudakki vaikkira vishayam illai …ithu athiyum thaandi oru imaginary plane la irunthu varuthunnu solla virumbaraen…….i mean the compositional parameters may be ….its the same applies to any body and any composition its not a compliant I am making murali…….the most important parametre to a composition in my dictionary is enjoyment……but this number is ecstacy for me.thanks,

He had told me that the best part of this song composing is the way you explained it to him and your knowledge of the literature. Truly mesmerizing and yet thought provoking. This composition definitely didn’t require a background music. To say good job would be an under estimation. So I would like to thank you for composing this wonderful piece.

Hi Murali:
Beautiful poetry and good singing by Pradip.
Loved your use of Kanakaangi melakarta to tune this. There are some nuances to how the vivaadi ragas have been used by St. Tyagaraja in his compositions like Ganamurthe. When I learned it a few years ago, I also learned that the vivaadi note (in this case G1) is usually flat and the note preceding or succeeding it is given a shake to impress upon the ‘vivaadiness’. Also R1 and G1 usually occur together as in the Ganamurthe kriti of St. Tyagaraja in the Pallavi only.
Good point about Venkatamakhi’s melakarta classification – it is like Panini’s Sanskrit grammar rules – people may rant about them but no one has the cheek to change them. It is set in stone now. :-)
Cheers!
- Arun.
Tn Arunagiri
said
“Pallavi only” should read as “Pallavi itself”. The Pallavi has both R1 and G1 in your composition, but they don’t appear together, if we go by the classical usage. It is commendable that you traversed the entire Kanakaangi scale in the Pallavi to define your raga of choice and the intent of using it.
Let me stop the nitpick right away….:)
Cheers!
