Nakshatra DeepangaL
Nakshatra DeepangaL Lyrics & Chords
Song : Nakshatra DeepangaL
Composer : Jaya-Vijaya
Singer : K.J.Yesudas
Movie : Nirakudam
Performed by : Murali Venkatraman
It is sometimes difficult to understand how an artist feels. If you ask Ilaiyaraja or M.S. Vishwanathan, they would swear and say that they would like to be remembered as composers and not as singers. I woudl guess the same with Rehman. These people are amazing creators and they pride themselves in their creations. The sense of producing something new, unique and unprecedented drives them hard towards music.
And then there are people like Sharath who probably want to be remembered as both great singers and composers. I have belabored over Sharath’s composing abilities in quite a few articles . However, if people had heard his “bhavayami” from a recent film, they would also understand how great a singer he is. His drive to perform beyond human reason is unmitigated.
But there are some like Jayan-Vijayan – the gifted twin duo who also are pupils of Balamuralikrishna similar to Sharath, who would like to be remembered for their singing only and not for their songs. However it is hard not to remember them when a song of Nakshatra DeepangaL’s quality comes afore. Its splendiferous tune with a brilliant orchestration delivered by a simmering Yesudas. I have no idea how this is picturized in the movie, but it is one of those songs which KJY sings occasionally in his carnatic concerts as a tribute to this great composer duo. Please find more info on Jayan-Vijayan here :

In my school days when I learnt Bharatanatyam at my Mom’s insistence, I had danced on this song a couple of times on stage. As I grew, my inherent reluctance to dance grew but the songs that I danced for stayed in mind. Needless to say my mom introduced me to these gems as she was preparing me for those dances. And now recognizing that her daughter is dancing well, she urged me to check if I could produce any worth singing this song.
You may let me know if there is any.
Thanks to Roshni for sending me this track out of her own volition after correctly guessing that I will be interested in it.

What a song! Your voice sounded a way nasal at few places in the beginning especially. Agree with Maruthi on some flats n offs. Still great job on such a song. Those tongue twister swaras!, very well rendered.

Wow, Murali,your unique and exquisite taste stands out yet again and the rendition matches upto it……fantastic….the structure of the song reminded me of Raagam,Dhaanam Pallavi….same raaga?(Ofcourse I heard Sahankarabaranm in the lyrics)
@~5:07 the line Naadaga……and again @~ 5:14 sounds minorly off to my ears……But that does not in anyway diminish the amazement in me!

Subbu.

Nice voice in this song Murali and interesting background information that you have provided. I did read the Hindu link and it was interesting.
Your aalaap was fine except from 0:18 onwards where some riffs could have been better. Felt that your singing after that lacked azhuththam … it was an easy singing style without much involvement … it may be because your voice is thin by nature that it gives me that impression. Recording is very clear and got to hear your voice in clarity which was good.
You know what? … I think this song is over-rated and personally I think it is a cut and paste of a few classical pieces rather than a coherent song that develops a good tune … this may have been apt for a movie but it does not impress me as a cover song, or for that matter a SONG. For people with classical knowledge this is child’s play … like painting a picture with a few colours.
Anyway Murali … enjoyed hearing your voice in a clear recording … overall soothing but does not grab me … just the song I guess!. Cheers.

Murali,
Much better recording man. In terms of improvement, the vocal track can be eq’d at the mid range to make the sound a little sharper. Did you use reverb? And if you did you use it as an insert?
Singing was very good too, except for some of the alaaps like Arvind pointed out, but very minor issues.
Good job man :)

Valiant attempt Murali. Appreciate you rendering this tough piece. Very good job overall. There are very few people that I know who have acquired a reasonably authentic malayalam diction at a later stage in life and that too for the sake of music. Kudos to you for all your effort in getting there – not a simple task by any means.

Murali – I appreciate your talent to sing being an untrained classical singer.
Surely, for the alaaps we need a lot of practice and exp. on the Classical front.
Being a non native Malayalam speaker your passion made you sing this is to be admired.
The pace with which you sang the ending swaras was brilliant with a little bit of practice you will surely be able to reach the top in singing this kind of songs.
Good Luck! and I truly enjoyed this.

I very much enjoyed that swaram duet you have with the violin. Very touch job, you were very close to perfection. Amazing man! You are one of the very few people I know who can try tough songs like these.

@Radhika : Thank you Radhika. However to my dismay I found that I have got two words wrong namely “aaRaattu” and “sadhiru” (courtesty : Aun Nair). What irritates me is that I got the words wrong and hence the pronunciation went wrong. They were not difficult words to say, but I wrote them up wrongly.
@Srividya: Thank you very much.
@Unnikrishnan : Thank you. The oriinal aalaap was too difficult to reproduce and hence the slip.
@Maruthi : Thank you bro. I am yet to check out your version of saagarangaLE. Will do soon.
@Ramya : Yes I noted the nasality in some places too. I think I have an inherent tendency to get nasal in some of the Malayalam and hindi words which I need to avoid.
@Subbu : I thought I did not have many offs in this. This song sung in a ghostly fashion by KJY and to redo it was arduous. But the pleasure of attempting and failing is better than not attempting at all !
@Meena: Thank you very much.
@Bharathi : Thank you !
@Arvind: You are absolutely right about my voice. But believe me, the microphone also seems to play a major role. I use a dynamic mic which seems to cut off the base in my voice (apart from the inability to sing full open throated due to neighbour constraints) because of which my voice always seems to lack the ‘azuththam’ which is much needed for semi-classicals. Whatever I end up singing kind of ends up being more ‘light’ than ‘semi-classical’. And I also agree partially with you on the compositional quality. IT would be a cakewalk to those people trained in carnatic (say Pradip and Rajesh) wheras it is a hard climb for people like me. But, I definitely disagree with the opinion that the song is a pseudo-composition. OF course, I do agree with your opinion it would very well fit the bill for a movie.
@George : My mixing guru ! Thanks for stopping by. I did use reverb but Nuendo doe snto allow me to “Send” it but only “insert” it. Can you throw some light on it ? And thanks for your comments.
@Kumar : Appreciate your words and your time. I realized recently that statements like :
1. I am not trained in classical
2. I am an amateur musician
3. I am not a native-speaker
if used regularly, are defenses to mask insincerity. I do not want to excuse myself as a person who cannot pronounce malayalam (or hindi/bangla/telugu/kannada) well since I am not a native speaker. I would rather be let known of my pitfalls and shown where I can improve. Your encouragement and criticism are highly appreciated.
@Bodhi : Your indulgence in other language music is commendable. Thanks for stopping by and listening.
@Priya: I will certainly work more on the aalaaps in the coming songs. thank you very much.
Murali Venkatraman said
@Bala: Thank you for your time and comments. I look forward to seeing more original work from you.
Maruthi said
Murali you dont have to apologetic for not pronouncing words in a language properly….the simple reason is being a tamil I cant talk in every slang out there….you know english very well ….but can you talk like the natives does…? never can perfect these things……KJS have sung “theru kovilae odiva” in the film " Andhaman kadhali" inspite of so much of help around him. SPB has sung Pantha pasam for bandha pasam……they are paid for their work……you are a quality musician ,no second thought on that , bring them good music out murali.

This is a tough song to attempt and full marks to you for attempting this and doing a nice job. Some of the twists and turns in the alaap and swaras were very well done.
With a little more practice, I think the alaap will come out perfect. Keep it up.

Murali: I have always been amazed about your knowledge on ragas and many other thing in carnatic music given that you have not had a chance to learn carnatic music from a guru. Nicely sung!!!
In many of your songs while you sing ’aaa’karam or ’ee’karam in the line endings…i feel your voice gets little muffled….might be a mixing issue….
Do sing more malayalam!!
