Q & A with Rendezvous: Breaking Ground
Before anyone else could get an exclusive on the new electropop jazz band RendezVous, we managed to get the skinny from RendezVous’ Itai Simon about why they are now the hottest band to watch out for in 2009.
Q: It seems that RendezVous has a rather loyal horde of electronica and jazz fans alike. How did all this happen?
A: Last 2004, Hagai Izenberg and I recorded an EP with a handful of our friends. It sounded pretty decent to us, so we decided to upload it via Internet. Little did we know that many people would download our song. Soon enough, different people from all over the globe were asking us for more songs. Of course, we couldn’t say no.
Q: How did you and Hagai first cross paths?
A: We met on our first day at Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. That’s where we studied music. Of course we were working musicians way before we went to Rimon, but perhaps it was destiny that led us to study music there.
Q:How long did it take for you to record your first song?
A: Hagai and I, together with two other musicians (Andrei on saxophone and Erez Bachar on drums), got together and recorded a live session that was almost entirely improvised on the spot. We just did a couple of takes for each piece of music and during the editing and mixing, we decided on which tracks to use. It was a rather memorable recording because we did it during the Holocaust Memorial Day. During this day in Israel, no one works and everybody else stays home. All the music studios were closed – that’s how we landed a session that evening with a studio that was completely empty… not to mention free!
Q: Did it take a while before music fans started swarming your EP?
A: It took a little time, but we were lucky to have reached the stage we were in that time. After our recording, all we did was master the tracks at Eshel Studios in Tel Aviv. We then made a website to offer our music for free on the Internet. After all, we recorded them for free!
Q: It was then that the comments and emails came pouring in. The feedback we received was mind-blowing! Thousands of people from all over have visited our website to download our music. Their comments made us feel like true-blue recording artists. Later, different radio stations in Candana and even in London started to play our music.
A: RendezVous’ very first album is coming out soon! For updates and free downloads of their music, check out their pages:
