Agreeing to Prateek, I am starting a discussion. Please let me know ur views on it.

Well, till now u all would be familiar with my voice from all my previous posts. I think I am a average singer with lots of loose ends in my singing, which i wanna improve. I think some songs I get away with but some songs which has a very broad pitching range are difficult for me……Its too difficult to remain in sur and reach the correct note with high pitch songs…………I admire some of the singers on Muziboo who do a wonderful job at high pitches….My personal fav is George who does everything so effortlessly….im sure he puts a lot of effort but it sounds effortlessly……

So I would like you people out there to put some light on improving the mid and high range for a singer……

There are many techniques that we can use to improve the range.

Basically, its about the right voice production, things that you learn in Voice Culture workshops.
- sustaining on notes
- singing patterns of notes, from lower ones to higher notes. This should be sung in a loop kind of fashion.

There r lots of techniques! :) and it can easily be worked on.

cheers….

I’ve a technique too that can work…

Go to any seaside and sing loudly for half hour. Make this a regular routine. After 6 months you’d see your range on high notes have increased :) Now don’t tell me you can’t find a sea…. Also make your tummy muscles strong as they hold the pressure when you sing any high pitch songs.
Good Luck!
Best wishes,
Sitarah

Hi AJ,

Nice effort here. I think the key operative is “Riyaaz” for better singing. Riyaz or practice or sadhana can be done in multiple ways:
1. For a start – take your tanpura or shruti box and do a long Sa. Hold it for as long as you can. The end may be shaky… Now do a long pranayaam – take a big breath in. Try the Sa again. Keep doing this for about 2-3 minutes.
2. Try to get your note alignment right – swarasthanam – singing in sargam SRGMPDNS/SNDPMGRS – I use Yaman for this technique. First do it slowly… You can do this in other Sampoorna ragas (full note ragas) too… Keeping increasing your speed gradually on this… Then try the same in aakar.
3. Alankaars – pattern repetition of notes – this requires a start to classical training.
4. Low note practise – to improve range. Go below Sa. Long hold on each note.
5. High notes – voice should be clear. Do not strain vocals. Keep singing as far as you can go beyond upper Sa – technique 2.
6. Practise your song of course, and listen to accomplished professional artists a LOT. Every time I listen to a song again, I understand the song and its nuances better.
Hope this helps,
Sudha

Hello Everyone…… According to me…. Range, Sur & capability for modulations is giftedness…. Techniques can only help is improving & perfecting that…. Higher registers depend upon which scale the voice is comfortable with. A person comfortable with B-flat can never make it upto upper D…. Just an example. Yes but with practice in B-flat…. He/She can improve the correct pitching in all the three octaves in B-flat…. Otherwise it can give a bad recoil action resulting in a permanent damage in the vocal chord……

Shampak.
