Remembering Bharathi...
Remembering Bharathi... Lyrics & Chords
December 11th marks the birth of Subramania Bharathi. I wanted to sing a song to commemorate the birth of this amazing man who took the entire Tamizh state by storm.
Born in a conservative Tamil Brahmin family in Tirunelveli in 1882, this man believed in freedom of the human kind! Freedom to live a life free from fears and inhibitions. He was probably born a hundred years too early. Such were his revolutionary and radical thoughts on subjects ranging from Romance to Patriotism.
I cannot think of one modern Tamizh poet or activist who does not admire or is influenced by the works of Bharathi. After seeing this post, even if a handful of you start looking for more info on Bharathi, I will consider it a success! :)
This song is from his famous “KaNNan PaadalgaL” which is a compilation of various songs and poems written, imagining Lord Krishna in various forms- as a lover, teacher, mother, son, daughter….the list goes on. The song is about Kannan as a little daughter….
With the month of Maargazhi approaching fast, my mind starts getting tuned to the exciting early mornings that begin with Thiruppaavai recitals in praise of Krishna. I consider this song a good preamble to the same! :)
The music for this song (Movie:MaNamagaL released in 1951)was originally scored by C.R.Subbaraman whom MSV was an assitant to. He has said in an interview how he enjoyed(and at the same time, feared in respect)teaching the tune to M.L.Vasanthakumari. My rendition is nowhere near hers but it is a sincere attempt to remind myself of the greatness of people like her whom I have had the good fortune of knowing about from my own grandparents.
My throat has suddenly dried up perhaps due to the onset of harsh winter but I have done my best to do justice to this song.
Please leave your valuable comments here and once again, thanks for listening! :)

This is a tough song and you have done a good job.
I think you need to work on your volume levels (vocals track)…. I hear some distortion/loudness when you hit higher notes. I remember seeing this problem in your recent renditions.

Beautiful rendition Adhithi which I listened via my monitors, rather than headphones. Very well done and great tribute to the Great Barathi. You embellished the song with a lot of brigas which reminded me of Sudha Ragunathan’s style, especially those swift brigas. This is probably the best showcase of your voice that I have heard so far. One thing I have noted in all your renditions is that your voice has dryness and seems to simulate tiredness and I wonder why!. In spite of this I am amazed at your voice control. However, if you could fix this area of your voice, then I think your renditions will be superbly perfect.
In any case it was great singing and enjoyed it a lot. God Bless.

Thanks a lot to all who favourited it! :)
@Bala- Hopefully the recording issues will be solved when i start using my new mic and soundcard very soon. Will need your help in understanding the set up! :)
@Arvind- A very special thanks to you for your comments- I really value them a lot! The tiredness in my voice could be due to the fact that I record quite late in the night?!!! Not sure but I will definitely address that issue with immediate effect! :)
@Maruthi- I did think of you while doing this song. I remember how you enjoyed the song when I sang it @ your Golu when Nambitha was a baby! :) Happy you are enjoying it now with Krish! :)

Tears of Joy No one would have a second thought about Bharathi’s impalpable poetic abilities. He was the only poet who didn’t succumb to temporal pressures and mean-minded political games in his generation. It doesn’t mean that other poets of his generation were opportunist either. Bharathi, according to me and many, was one of the purest souls next to Kaalidasan, Ramakrishna Paramahamsar and Vivekanandar who are believed to have spoken with Goddess Shakthi. His life is a lesson to us all in many aspects. Bharathi and Chellamaal lead a successful life(though not a successful life monetarily) with joy-filled souls. At times, I never used to show my temperament. I happened to come across his words, ‘Rowthram Pazhagu’ which I still remember having studied in my school days. Though these 2 words seem to be simple, they have a deep meaning. I should keep on writing about this man who is the inspiration for many poets and lyricists comprehensively. Whoelse could write poems as this man has written. appaaaaaa, தீக்குள் விரலை வைத்தால் நந்தலாலா; நின்னைத் தீண்டும் இன்பம் தோன்றுதடா நந்தலாலா. whom the God loves die young and Bharathi was one whom the God loved very much. :-(
Thanks a ton Adithi. May God bless you.

Adithi,Goose bumps all the way!The modern day singers require several channel mixers and umpteen effects, and several sound engineers,to make them sound good. What amazes me is your ability to keep the listener hooked on and that too repeatedly with the sheer brilliance of your tonal and rendition quality, with unplugged numbers!Outstanding, and to my favorites.
I may not be way off If I call you by the title of "Queen of Unplugged’ :)In unplugged numbers you are so free, relaxed and let your passion, the inner self, the heart take over with out the mind involving itself as there are no restrictions which may force YOU to be conscious, bringing out the best in you,in my view…….Hats off….
You second innings here(recent 5 months)have been absolutely mesmerising Adithi….Nice to have known you!
ONly dhrishti is your recording which has occasional distortions, time and again in your recent past……please do some thing about it……We dont want to lose the totality of enjoyment in translation!

Adithi, Sorry to be late here and I would certainly have regretted if I had not listened to this.At the outset let me appreciate you for having chosen to pay homage to one of India’s greatest poets ever.
This song is a beautiful composition in a ragamalika starting with Kaapi, then moving through Maand, Vasantha, Thilang and ending with Neelamani. The ending portion “un kannil neer vizhunthal…” is the most expressive with the employment of two dhaivatams to create two levels of pathos!
Last but not least my comments on the singer: Of all your songs I have listened here, this is your most outstanding one! You have proved your class as a singer with this superb number.
You deserve the best of credits and my favourite!

Thanks Sundar. The reason I added that description was to say how many manmade barriers he had to break to set his spirit free! In those days it was a huge deal to even consider things like walking hand in hand with your wife on the streets especially being born in the abovesaid cultural setup.
“ஜாதிகள் இல்லைடி பாப்பா " என்று அவர் பாடிய அந்த துணிச்சல் அவர் பிறந்த இனத்தின் பல மக்களுக்கு அவர்காலத்தில் இல்லை என்பதை உணர்த்தவே அவ்வாறு கூறினேன். உள்நோக்கம் ஏதும் இல்லை.
