When SPB was judging the performances of a bunch of talented kids at the “Sapthaswarangal” shooting more than a decade ago, I was only a few feet away from the stage. A nervous (blessed) kid called Chinmayee was being consoled by the legend when she broke down, too happy/ excited to be singing in front of him. I guess she never looked back after that! She went from strength to strength after being spotted by ARR, and after this wonderful solo!
It is easily the toughest song I have sung till date! I wonder how that kid managed it at such a tender age with no experience of singing in a studio recording! Truly gifted! Chinmayi is one of the most talented singers of today!
Coming to lesser things, like my rendition for instance, there were so many encumberances towards finishing this song:
1. The track was incomplete, so I had to try and patch it up a little towards the end!
2. At the time of recording this song, I was in a hurry to finish it and couldn’t find anyone to do the male chorus bits. So I had to try something different. :P I sang it myself. Note the Helium-drunk effect in those parts! ;)
3. Towards the end of the song, I had made a mistake with one single word but didn’t notice it till the mixing was complete. Kindly pardon me for the same.
The song is about a mother’s love for her daughter. A mother-daughter relationship is a special one where at some point in time they see each other as friends! I loved Vairamuthu’s lyrics the most especially where he says, “Iraval velicham nee, Iravin kanneer nee” (a borrowed light, night’s tears) to describe the pain a surrogate mother feels when her adopted daughter wants to break away from her.
Hari Bhaskar, again, is the kind soul that helped with mixing this song and a million thanks to him for the same!

Superb pick Adithi! I admire Chinmayi not only as a singer but in different ways. I think she is same age as me but her achievements are so admirable for her age.
oops…coming to your rendition, very nicely sung! Only thing i felt was you could have added harmonies on the “nenjil jil jil…” part, it should give a nice soft smooth flow to the song, this is my humble suggestion.

Akka, about the song I have the opinion that you could have taken some more time to cover this. Bcoz I’m damn sure that u can sing much much better than this! The voice was shaky at many places and slight offs here n there. It’s a really tough one to cover, but you have everything inside you to make it 100% perfect! Just my honest opinion…
Then, in the chorus part, me too felt as if a kid was singing! Chweet voice :)
One last thing… Akka, you cud hav asked me to sing the male chorus part! :(

Just a note on the “cute” humming! I wanted a little girl’s voice and tried my best to get it but couldn’t. So I sang the chorus part alone in a lower pitch and transposed it to a higher one so that the voice sounded childish! Hence the Helium-drunk effect! :D

A real toughie in aaall aspects! All the podi sangathis were sooo effortlessly & beautifully done akka!! And breath control is another fear factor in this song… U’ve managed it very well in most of the places :)

You just created a new version! Don’t even want to compare it to the original. It’s simply brilliant by itself. Easily one of the toughest to sing. And what clarity in your high pitches of the male chorus! Everything was sung so softly that it had such a tranquilizing effect. Needless to say, great breath control and capacity! Hey Adithi, What an enthralling rendition! :) An extremely tough song to attempt and you did an excellent job! :) I just lost myself in this song which always happens to me with this song! :) Except for slight timing issues in the overlapping parts and a few minor off notes here and there, it was an absolute treat to my ears :) It is amazing to see how you challenge yourself in every recording and marvel at it!

This is an heavenly song from AR, which can stand for ages to come. Me too agree about Chinmayee. I’m a big fan of her and she’s a regular for AR these days.
Pefect selection Adithi. This is a super tough song and I’ve seen so many singing this song and not many were comfortable doing it. You’ve done a brilliant job. Kudos for maintaining the soul of the song in your own good voice. The lead parts were awesome but the backing chorus was sounding a bit stressed.

Always heard this in telugu and this is one of my hot fav. songs :) I had a lot inside to say abt ur singing but ever end up jus trying to put them and never cud put them completely :D it’s jus awesome adithi… all the high pitch chorus(‘Nenjil jil jil jil jil’) vocals were the one which truly stolen my heart. Was the pitch you chose a bit higher than the original Adithi??? felt so… :)
