I just can’t believe that she turned 72 today! If you saw her in person and witnessed her enthusiasm and exuberance, you would think she is only half her age! :)
I had the good fortune of singing in front of her at the Nehru Stadium, Chennai for one of the felicitation events in 1999/2000(my memory fails me so badly here!!!) and also listening to her sing duets on stage with almost all leading male singers in the industry!
What a voice! Having sung in over 12 languages in all genres and almost for every Music director in Indian cinema, nothing short of “Versatile” should be used to describe her. Happy Birthday, our dear Janakimma! :)
This recording is perhaps the oldest of my recordings since joining Muziboo! Back then, I did not know how to use Background shruthi and knew nothing about EQing, reverb, multiple takes and punches. I hadn’t even thought of doing some homework to correct the Urdu diction which sounds pathetic when i listen to it now. One of those pristine days before I got currupt with using technology! :). I have just applied compression to the old file before posting here.
The influence of the Mellisai Mannar’s works on my family has been so overwhelming. In their own words, “They walk MSV, talk MSV, breathe MSV”. So I grew up listening to his songs, some of them so rare……as this one by SJ. Set to the lyrics of none other than P.B.Srinivas, “Tu hai Raja” is one of SJ’s best songs in MSV’s music. Her flawless Urdu pronunciation captivates the listener equally as her intoxicating voice.You can see the video of the song in You Tube.
I could not get the Tamil version of the song but the very last line and the tune that I heard years ago stayed indelibly in my mind. Hence the medley of words towards the end of the song……

And i am forced to quote a line here from the song “Unnai nan ariven….(Guna)”….That is….“Neeyo Vanam vittu mannil vantha tharakai……Nano yarum vanthu thangi sellum malikai….”……Likewise , superb ma….Great voice even though you have detailed about the ignorance of technical aspects that time……Great……The in between ’Sangathi’s are while Thundupallavi’s are great….Answerless……
