My sister has been asking me to sing this song ever since I joined Muziboo. Later, Maruthi Nambi sent me the track and requested me to sing it. Recently, my cousin and childhood friend, Shankar, reminded me of the song and got me working with it after all the months of procrastination. So this song is for them all :)
In my opinion, Vani Jayaram’s voice was used up best by Mellisai Mananr, followed by Shankar-Ganesh. For some reason, IR did not work extensively with the singer (when compared with SJ and PS) but has given some rare gems like this one. “EnnuLLil engo” is perhaps the best of VJ-IR combination. It is a heavy theme with strong classical strokes. Hence IR’s choice of Vani is commendable for it is only a voice as hers that could do justice to the highly demanding composition. Based on Raag Madhuvanthi, the song has dark shades of longing and pining for one’s love. The theme of the movie was very controversial in those days and hence we were forbidden from watching it. The song sequence is very disturbing in the context of the story.
There are some valuable lessons on breathcontrol to be learnt from this song. In those days when multiple recordings and cut-and-paste were unheard of, the entire song was done in a single take. If you heard the song, you will understand how daunting a task it must be to deliver this song which would leave the singer gasping for breath quicker than usual. Hence, impeccable planning on the singer’s part is necessary to understand and follow strict breathing patterns and delivery of phrases in a methodical way. That is another reason why I did not want the breaths and gasps in my singing to be edited in this particular recording. It has been a massive learning experience with the amount of planning that went into singing it. I am now confident of singing it live without struggling for breath :)

I was in marina beach with my son when my phone alarmed about this mail from muziboo Adithi covered “ennullil yengo” ……GNB Kutchery la people used to sit so far away they wont hear it but but they assume what he would have sung and say ahaaaa ooohoooo……I did the exact same sitting near Gandhi statue ( which is very clean today no kaaka yecham ……remember yesterday was the parade )
The discription above brought me a big smile, as I went back to the days you sang “Barso re mega” from Guru which I sequenced…… U were not in greatest of comfort in context of breath control that evening….I was almost listening to you sceptically that you might break at any point …….but you managed it, that was indeed a lesson for me too.From then on I cover most of my songs in single takes and retakes for a mistake.
My uncle (meenas dad) recalled once about IRs greatness on this film composition as he is the production executive in this film……super duper hit then…….
I have covered this song too….but your training comes really handy here…that control in emotion is natural as u dont have to think about anything else as u have prepared well.

1:55 — 2:06 was superb….after that a couple of seconds…it was very evident that the pitch was way too high. the natural sweetness of ur voice is a little subdued at the high registers….but having said that….amazing still at those heights!! very well done.

I just wanted to say one thing about the “strain in the high registers”. I believe that for it not to be noticeable, one needs to be gifted with a voice as the legends’ OR the voice needs to be trained constantly OR technical “make-up” to the voice must be applied. I have none of the above and hence my journey in pursuit of perfection will continue. :)
But if you have noticed the original, you will see that Vanimma thins her voice exactly at the high registers when the humming in charanams ends. That was what I was trying to do as well because if sung fullthroated in that place, it wont sound strained BUT will mar the beauty of the song. Also at this pitch, to manage high notes is a huge task. There have been some songs of SJ and KSC where I have wondered if it was necessary for them to have literally screamed at that pitch. That, again, depends on the type of composition and individual perception.

It is very difficult to express about this evergreen song – this is such a favorite of mine that I am at loss for words to explain what makes this song so special :-)
