The battle was won and the group stood proudly over their fallen enemy. At last their kind had been freed from the torments that had plagued their home.
One of the victorious, a female, backed away from the group – unable to hide her injuries any further. Blood coloured her attire crimson and she fell over, too weak to continue.
Her lover noticed her first and hurried to her side.
“Why didn’t you say?” he asked her, realizing her fate – her inevitable fate.
“I did not……want…. to worry you….” she whispered, using the last of her strength to wipe a tear from his face.
“I…….love………”
Her body relaxed and her breathing slowed. Her heart went still.

They stood before the grave, heads hung in sorrow. The priest spoke his blessings to the buried and her friends.
The lover left them and a friend followed, holding his hand to stop him.
“Are you alright?” he near-whispered and the other shook himself free.
“Why?”
The friend shook his head and embraced the other, who broke out in tearful sobs.
“I know not,” the embrace meant, “but as long as you remember, she is with you always.”
