Sloka from Soundarya Lahar... Lyrics & Chords
Hi all, I always wanted to sing something for my Guru, C Narayanan Namboothiri. He was a turning point in my life. He redefined me as a person and singer. I did my Carnatic lessons from him for around 8 years. Was almost like a gurukula system. I cherish everything what I have with him.
Legend : Soundarya Lahari meaning waves of beauty consists of two parts viz. Ananda Lahari meaning waves of happiness (first 41 stanzas) and Soundarya Lahari (the next 59 stanzas). It is believed that Lord Ganesha himself has etched the Ananda Lahari on Mount Meru (Some people believe that Sage Pushpa Dhantha did the etching). It was read from there by Sage Goudapada who taught it to Adi Sankara. Adi Sankara himself added the rest of the 59 stanzas and completed it.
Sloka:
Shivah shakthya yukto yadi bhavati shaktah prabhavitum;
Na chedevam devo na khalu kusalah spanditumapi;
Atas tvam aradhyam Hari-Hara-Virinchadibhir api;
Pranantum stotum vaa katham akrta-punyah prabhavati;
Meaning :
Lord Shiva, only becomes able.
To do creation in this world along with Shakthi
Without her, Even an inch he cannot move,
And so how can, one who does not do good deeds,
Or one who does not sing your praise,
Become adequate to worship you
Oh , goddess mine, Who is worshiped by the trinity.
My guru gave me this tune. Thank you Sir for everything.

Awesome man!!!! I adore your Guru Bhakthi…. Nice to see this rendition…. The way, you delineated the sangathees threw me flat… Such a blissful package this has been!!! A suggestion from my end – Pls do take care of the stress on the syllables as I believe Sanskrit is the toughest language to speak requiring more of our attention on the syllabic stresses and the pronunciations should be spot-on… I loved this man…. Guys the tune is not done on a beat or something like that. The Sloka is just taken from saundarya lahari and my teacher used to sing in this tune. And it is not based on any taal. Its just like an alaap. Thanks for all the comments.

Very nice Unni……liked it a lot….Dhanyasi is a beautiful ragam. Your sangathis were really well done. Not sure, but the scale felt a little high, and as an effect, the ‘na khalu kusalah spanditumapi’ portion felt a tiny bit less energetic than the other lines.
Loved the prabhavati ending sangathi and neraval.

Fantastic singing, Kutta! Loved the Dhanyasi tune for this favourite sloka of mine! :) But I have to say I heard more shades of Bhairavi at places. Again, I am not an expert in this but only said from what little I have heard and known.
You have to start doing regular saadhakam, Unni! This is your strongest point and please don’t ignore it! Apart from giving you mental peace and satisfaction, it is going to greatly help you in seasoning your voice for any kind of challenges with musical assignments, no matter what genre you sing.
Sanskrit diction needs more attention, so please work on it diligently.

Unni, Welcome change in bringing such rare gems here. Let me appreciate your respect and dedication for your Guru. For a casual listening it sounds so good. But when you say it is based on raag dhanyasi, the technical details come into play. Dhanyasi, as you know is shudha dhanyasi swaras in the ascent and Thodi in the descent. In the descending notes of this sloka, the shudha dhaivatham and shudha rishabham notes did not have clarity and hence did not sound like dhanyasi in those portions. This is only to point out the technical side of your singing. Leave out all this, and it was quite refreshing, enjoyable. Pranam to your guru and congrats for attempting this sloka.
