Unni, this doesn’t sound like your first composition at all :). BTW, we both have a similarity in first composition. When I did kathiruppaen, even I tuned for the lyrics :). I wrote the lyrics almost 4 yrs back and I got to tune it later. Glad you sang that for me. I’m still a rookie composer lol :).

So your composer journey has started. Keep going and I’ll be happy to be part of your compositions in the future :).

Dear Friends,

Scene 1: An evening at Ajeesh Ettan’s house (our hangout place where we all discuss a lot of music) Ajeesh ettan is busy with his work and has to go out with his family at 7pm for a birthday party. So I am asked to stay back for a while. I open my laptop and just browse through my songs which I have written and not yet composed and read this ayyappa song wishing that it would have been the right time to have a song on Swami during mandala kaalam(auspicious time for pilgrimage to Sabarimala). Unni enters with his usual smile and greets me….“Eda nee enna cheyyunne?” ( What are you doing?). I tell him about whats on my mind. He reads the song and asks me the meter which I have in my mind… I recite the song…. Unni then listens to some classical songs to get into a mood. Then he comes back and again reads the song but this time slowly humming a tune. I am amazed, the tune was wonderful. Then I feel he got really charged. We went and opened Ajeeshettan’s laptop and recorded the entire rough version.“Makaradeepam Deva hitham” which means that the Makara Jyothi(Makara is the auspicious month in malayalam calendar where the Lords shows a jyothi in the sky for all his devotees visiting sabarimala, everyyear)was initially not that but something else but Unni wanted somethign related to Makaradeepam there and the line came. Then we got another dilemma now the song track is good we want it to be released whom to approach?

Scene2: After going through a lot of names. Unni told me call Sibu, i think he will do a fantastic job. I was a bit hesitant has I knew that Sibu had some commercial works in hand was quite busy. Unni encouraged me and I called Sibu. He happily agreed on a 2 weeks time condition. We sent the track to Sibu. Sibu after hearing the track got so excited that he started the orchestra immediately gave us the first cut in 2 days and the final mix on the 4th day. He just rocked.

I am thankful to God for giving me such talented people to work with.

Regarding the meaning of lyrics. Its a task which I prefer not to do, because Swami Ayyappa is a famous deity and most of the words that I have used are praise him are heard by all…. But I will try my best.

“Kaanana vaasa- means he who dwells in the forest”

“Ponmala Deva” – means the Lord of our holy mountain(Sabarimala)

“Kaliyuga Varada” means “Kaliyuga”(We have 4 yugas and the last of them is Kali, this yuga is said to have a lot of adharama and Swami is the lord of Kaliyuga" Hence we call him Kaliyuga varadha.

“Shree Manikanta” – One who has the jewel tied around his neck.

“Karupaninjirumudiyenthi malayerumbol” – When your devotee is climbing the mountain(in this case the singer) wearing the auspicious black dress and bearing the irumudi(offerings to lord tied and placed on your head)

“Enthividayya en panthalavasa” – Give me strength or help me to climb oh dweller of Panthala(Panthala is the place where swami ayyapa lived)

Malakayattam kadinatharam – meaning its difficult to climb the mountain.

Malamelam bhakthi mayam – But on top of the mountain there is bliss of devotion….

Manathaaril swami mukham – My mind is filled with swami’s image….

Manamuruki en sharanam vili – I chant the sharanm with an aching heart….

Pamba nadhi punyavathi – Pampa river is the purest….

Aazhi mukham paapaharam- the coconut we carry in the irumudi is thrown in the aazhi( a pyre that never dies out) and it says it will erase our sins.

makaradeepam devahitham – THe makara light is the like or wish of the Lord.

So this is the jist of the song….actually if you have heard the tale of swami ayyappan all these are self explanatory… so please read about him and then you will understand.
