The English meaning of this Bengali song goes like this:

Thinking what in my mind that my two eyes are filled with tears – Oh friend?

Music for almost all the songs written by Rabindranath Tagore in Bengali was composed by Tagore himself and so they all fall under a special genre called RABINDRA SANGEET. Of course various great singers, both past and present, have rendered most of these songs and many music composers have composed different background music, but no one has changed the original tune of the songs set by Tagore.

I agree with you Harshan, Rabindra Sangeet is all about expressing the lyrics, since it is said that the great poet Tagore simultaneously created the song and it’s music – a tune perfectly apt for each song from it’s creator’s point of view. Unfortunately RS has not fully spread to the non-bengali audience mainly because of the language barrier. But just knowing the meaning of the song is enough to appreciate and relish the inner beauty of the mood that is evoked by the song.

Giri, this is the first time I have listened to your song! What a beautiful selection and AWESOME presentation! Robindro Songeet is all about presenting the lyrics and emotions without too much musical gynastics. Your rendition was very appropriate. I do not understand Bangla and do not know if you do either but your pronounciations sounded correct to the ears. I am also happy to have visited your song as your showed your versatility of musical choice and willingness to embrace a genre that may not have a mass appeal even though rooted in musical history and culture. Bangla is a very sweet language and you sounded so soft and deep. Though I don’t understand Bangla but can guess some words that I recall from the period before and for quite some time after 1971 when Bangla presentations were broadcast on Radio Pakistan and Pakistan TV.
