ViLayaada idhu nerama - Carnatic unplugged

ViLayaada idhu nerama - Car... Lyrics & Chords

Song: ViLayaada idhu nerama
Genre: Carnatic, Devotional, Tamil
Composer: T. N. Bala.
Raagam: Shanmukapriya
Talam: Adhi

The song was highly popularised by the famous singer Late Maharajapura Santhanam. My aunt taught me this song when I was 9, but my current version is largely influenced by Santhanam sir’s version. Coming to this post, its one of the sudden happenings once again. :)

Residual cold and all, I wanted to simply play the shruthi and sing this song while working in the kitchen. Just placed the laptop on the counter, played the shruthi aloud and sang. On the spur of a moment idea, decided to record.

Where it backfired, is that there is some renovation work going on in the apartment next door. Some of that noise also entered the background. In between when there was some drilling going on, I had to sing some lines twice or thrice without any particular rhythm, so that later I could just cut the part with heavy machinery noise in the background.

Also, I only sang on a mental taalam, so please also excuse any lapse there, my bad. The aalaap is only my uncertain experiment, and the actual song begins from about 3:00.

I was inspired to post this seeing how many of you took time to listen to my previous Carnatic bit….would love to hear your thoughts on this one too….:)

Good attempt…
Aalaap could have been sung better, or made shorter…
Pitch should have been one or two semitones lower… It gives more freeness in your voice!!

Anyway best wishes!!

Raga Alaap you have told its your experiment. I felt some small issues there. but i really appreciate your manodharma. Sangthis could have been clearer. from 3:00 the sangathis were clear. Very nice pick. liked the throw in your voice for the carnatic numbers.
Best!!!

@Ajay – haha, I finished first…they were continuing, but I probably scared them off a little…thank you…:)
Vaishak, Unni, Adithi – actually I’ve never tried doing an aalaap before, and I don’t even know if and what are the guidelines for doing one…I simply tried to do some funny experimenting….
Surely, I’ll practice more and more to learn and do it properly from next time onwards. Hopefully, it won’t get worse than this one, so will keep trying…thank you for all your pointers… :))

Hi Rekha,

great attempt on the alapana. The song’s layam/pace was good.

There are minor shruthi slips here and there in the alapana.

Practicing sarali, jantai, dattu varishais and alankaarams in swarams and akaarams in 3 speeds will help a lot.

I am having to do it currently since I resumed my Carnatic vocal lessons. :-) I also use a metronome to keep track of the time signature.

Cheers!

Late here but glad I got here to listen to your bold classical rendition. Liked your voice which stone ground this raagam and nice tamil lyrics to a fine aromatic musical powder that would have pervaded your neighbourhood … a perfect excuse for any handymen workers to take a coffee break, which I suspect they actually did!.

Your voice shows good timbre and training and most importantly for me … I love the confident and proper delivery … way to go!. With more practice one feels that your voice could be tempered to perfection for a flawless and amazing delivery. It is quite evident that all the sangathis are already in your head waiting for the vocal chords to do justice to them. Singing is like going to the gym too … only workouts will help, especially with classical music.

In Shanmugapriya as M2, P and D1 are all next to each other needs a bit more care I guess when revolving around those pivotal notes. Very awesomely sung nevertheless and well worth a good applause for an ex tempore performance!.

Great work!.

Hi,

This rendition is good. Open throated singing that matches carnatic music well. Good breath controls – pause at appropriate places. In few places the raga appeared to be shaky and deviated… probably due to external disturbances…. I could understand. You have a nice voice…. Cheers…

But jokes apart, your voice is a big plus. I feel that you could easily attempt any song and you’ve the range and voice to do that. Keep practising and i’m sure you can fare very well.
