Advice on purchasing good recording equipments..
Rekha swaminathan (on and off...) posted
Hi everyone,
I need some advice on technology…:)
A recent member to Muziboo as well as to the world of singing along with Karoakes and recording/mixing, I’d like some advice from the pool of experienced people here, on buying some good recording equipments. I currently only use a laptop and basic headphones. Looking to buy some exclusive equipments.
I probably wouldn’t go hi-fi altogether already (need to first do a lot of singing homework before that…:-) ), but would love to get some advice on good mics, sound cards (actually, I’ve no clue what really they are and whether they are necessary) and the paraphernalia. What is suitable for beginners, for more seasoned singing, singing with Karaokes, unplugged singing, etc.
I did search the net for such advice, but it’d be great to hear more first-hand tips. Am sure it would be very helpful to many of us starters…
Thank you!
Cheers
Rekha
PS: Sorry if the same topic was already discussed previously…If so, could someone simply point me to it?

Thats a nice aswer Sojan….:)
A condensor mic is also a recording equipment…. That also needs another equipment to run….called ‘Phantom Power’. Moreover this needs to be connected to a Hardware interface to connect to the Pc…. Few Hardware interfaces have phantom power in built….few doesn’t….
M-Audio is is good company for Inerfaces.
Rode & AKG are supposed to be better with mics….
Untill you have clean input….there’s hardly you can do except for adding reverb or a lil compression…. As inbuilt pc sound cards are not so good n also emitts certain noises which gets into the recording…. So we opt for External Sound Cards also called Mixer or Hardware Interface with lil differences. Does the same thing but with different facilities.
They come up in different models….
for eg, 1. USB, 2. Firewire, 3. RC
So depends which ever is suitable.
I have an USB…. :) Thats even more probable for a Laptop. :)
I don’t think you need a Condensor mic right now though…. You can get a good dynamic mic such as a Sure SM58 to start with…. You can get the dealers chart online in their websites…. Or you can go for a Condensor from the beggening…. depends on your wish…. Hope this helps…. :D

Shampak.

Rekha ….I am not an expert like others when it comes to mixing….but I am telling you based on my experience. Get a normal external audio interface …the one which I am using now is a 25 dollar product some “turtle creek” stuff ….but it works. It catches your vocal signal clearly. I would recommend condenser mic to begin with, get a decent dynamic mic like shure sm58, you can have it lifelong ….its one of the best dynamic mics around. Also use a pre-amp and connect your mic to it so that your vocal signals are amplified. I have a M-AUDIO preamp which I bought for like 40 dollars. Also there are some decent mics of shure …if you dont want to spend 100 bucks on SM58.

Hi Rekha,
Since you live in the US, you could go visit a Daddy’s Junky music shop. :-) You get lotsa neat stuff there.
Shure SM58A Beta is very good for a dynamic mic option… I use Audiobox USB (external sound card) connected on the USB interface of my laptop, and use Cubase for final mixing…
If you want to shell bigger bucks, some musicians I know recommend Mac-based recording gear like Macbook Pro running Logic Express (software) over Apogee Duet interface (sound card)
Hope this helps. Just sharing my limited knowledge,
-Sudha

Hi Rekha,
There is no need to buy any recording equipments but you need only the techniques of mixing and a good quality condensor microphone. You can learn the techniques from NVK Sir or Harshan Ji. George has already uploaded online course on mixing and recording techniques which you can learn online itself.
Regards.
