Thanks a lot Jo, for introducing me to this great group – Muziboo!
I remember the first time I recorded a song – this was two years back. I used the Plantronics PC stick microphone that I use for chatting, kept the karaoke in the background and then sang along with it. Yes- I know! It felt nice to listen to my voice along with the background music, but as you can imagine – the final mix was a disaster. I think I have come a long way from my stone-age recording.
Positives
- Versatility: I recognized my talent to be versatile in singing different languages – Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and even English.
- Singing with an open throat with vocal control: I just let myself go at those high notes and pleasantly find myself in full control
- Ability to listen and learn from constructive feedback: I have started a full-fledged vocal warm-up session before recording any song. Initially my voice used to change from the beginning of the song, to the 1st stanza to the second stanza as my voice keeps opening up. My friends advised me to do a complete warm-up before going in for the kill. I do the vocal warm-ups by Eric Arceneaux (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5CWsFaVnWM) which is available free on You Tube, before recording any song. The warm-up sessions sounds and looks really silly to anyone in your house :-) …but it really works!
- Recording and Mixing: I have improved in leaps and bounds on this aspect. Thanks a lot to George’s advice and Raj (my husband) who helped in setting up some really good recording gear.
- Limiting those off-notes: That used to creep in a lot in my initial recordings. Thanks to the advice and help from Murali and NVK sir who helped me improve a lot.
Development Needs
- Breath control: That’s something I struggle with in some songs. I am taking a lot of good advice and practicing to get it right.
- Low Notes: I am comfortable at the mid and higher spectrum, but when the notes start going really low, I falter. Lot of practice required in that area.
I owe it to Muzibians who really help me to improve every aspect of my favorite hobby – Singing. I have made some really good friends here and just awaiting that day when we all have a musical get-together!

Rashmi,
I think your assessment is pretty accurate. Versatality is definitely your strength. Akhiyonki to ABBA you have it covered in 4 languages :-). I would suggest that you try to focus one genre and dabble in others as you have done. Your voice suites mid to high range better and certainly expressions are usually good in your songs. Try singing songs with different emotions to expand your range as far as emotions go. Pitching is another area where I think you should focus more to weed out those slight off notes in some of your songs – I have that problem too :-).
Have enjoyed singing the Malalayalam duets with you and hope do more :-).

You are blessed with an endearing tone. A tone which would make the listeners wanting to hear more of. You have been performing pretty consistently from the days of kalyaaNa thEn nilaa and with all the good knowledge in mixing now, you are only bound to do better. Wish you all the best.

Rashmi, Good assessment. Thanks for tat warmup link. Wud try them.
You sing beautifully Rashmi. I admire your voice, especially your semi classical melodies like chenthar mizhi, ennodenthine, gopika vasatham and your latest kalyani song. Ofcourse, I was humming Abba cover for quiet sometime hearing ur upload. You are a versatile singer. Your voice has that playback quality( Yest when I was listening to some new song in radio, I was strongly reminded of your voice)
I think pitching issuses creep in when you are in a haste or dont concentrate much.
Looking forward to more variety of songs from you. All the best.
Cheers:)
