Thanks a lot Jo, for introducing me to this great group – Muziboo!
I remember the first time I recorded a song – this was two years back. I used the Plantronics PC stick microphone that I use for chatting, kept the karaoke in the background and then sang along with it. Yes- I know! It felt nice to listen to my voice along with the background music, but as you can imagine – the final mix was a disaster. I think I have come a long way from my stone-age recording.
Positives
- Versatility: I recognized my talent to be versatile in singing different languages – Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and even English.
- Singing with an open throat with vocal control: I just let myself go at those high notes and pleasantly find myself in full control
- Ability to listen and learn from constructive feedback: I have started a full-fledged vocal warm-up session before recording any song. Initially my voice used to change from the beginning of the song, to the 1st stanza to the second stanza as my voice keeps opening up. My friends advised me to do a complete warm-up before going in for the kill. I do the vocal warm-ups by Eric Arceneaux (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5CWsFaVnWM) which is available free on You Tube, before recording any song. The warm-up sessions sounds and looks really silly to anyone in your house :-) …but it really works!
- Recording and Mixing: I have improved in leaps and bounds on this aspect. Thanks a lot to George’s advice and Raj (my husband) who helped in setting up some really good recording gear.
- Limiting those off-notes: That used to creep in a lot in my initial recordings. Thanks to the advice and help from Murali and NVK sir who helped me improve a lot.
Development Needs
- Breath control: That’s something I struggle with in some songs. I am taking a lot of good advice and practicing to get it right.
- Low Notes: I am comfortable at the mid and higher spectrum, but when the notes start going really low, I falter. Lot of practice required in that area.
I owe it to Muzibians who really help me to improve every aspect of my favorite hobby – Singing. I have made some really good friends here and just awaiting that day when we all have a musical get-together!

Rash,
U are aware of ur shortcomings and that is what i appreciate in a singer….being honest to urself………ur voice is fantastic and in my eyes u should become professional soon……u r much much better than some of the new female voices in the music industry……keep treating us with more songs….
Regards,
AJ

That was a pretty good self assessment write up, Rashmi. I have been hearing you for a while now, and can probably notice all the points you have mentioned above. Practice makes perfect and you have proved it. Your voice has come a long way from what it was, kudos to you.
One thing that I see all of us lacking just a little bit (in some numbers) is the energy. Somehow, think in trying to get the song right, somewhere, the energy and the feel gets lost :) So, guess this is for all singers to always keep in mind.
Good luck in everything to come!!
