Janhavee's Intro and Queries
Janhavee posted
Dear Musical Artists
I am just a few weeks old in this Muziboo, although love for music has been growing since my childhood. I have some back ground in Carnatic singing since childhood days and later after coming into the US got tutored in Bay Area from Jayashree Vardharajan for couple of years.
Strengths :
I am comfortable in singing low and mid range tunes. I can take high range…but don’t want to hold on there for long…so I am hesitant to try it. I love to sing Bhajans and light music. My mother tongue is Kannada, studied in RSK Trichy , TN, Hindi being my 2nd language. So I am pretty comfortable with Hindi, Kannada and Tamil (might have pronunciation problems). I can sing better, if I understand the lyrics and it should be meaningful.
Weakness :
I cannot make a carbon copy of the original. I love to play around a bit. It could annoy a few, but I like it this way. For the same reason I might sound off tune in some places. With practice I can get better at it.
Need Help :
I use the LogiTech PC stick microphone that I use for chatting, keep the karaoke in the background use head phones ( Sennheiser HD 457)and then sing along. Did I hear disaster ??? right. I Use NeroStartSmart for recording….forget about mixing, it doesn’t do a good job…or maybe I am not doing it right. My husband has a lexicon, which he uses for his Synthesizer, but for some reason it wouldn’t take audio input. So, I need help big time. HELP ME !!
Any leads on Karaoke Tracks??
Thanks! George for starting this group.
Thanks! Everybody for your time and response in advance.
Cheers

Janhavee,
I am glad you’ve joined muziboo. Since you are fairly new here, I am not in the best position to comment about your strengths and weaknesses. I will revisit that in due time. However, I wanted to provide some insight as far as recording is concerned. You mentioned your husband owns a lexicon. What model is it? Regardless, what you should do is buy a decent condenser/dynamic mic (Shure, AKG,Rode etc) with an XLR input and hook it up to the lexicon. You can then hook the lexicon to your pc/mac via USB. You would also need to invest on software. On the PC, this could be Cubase, Adobe Audition etc. You can find older versions on ebay for about 10-15 bucks. That is enough for you to get started. You would need to read up on mixing. There is plenty of free reading material available online. Let me know if you need help with this. Good luck on your musical journey and feel free to shoot questions at the Muziboo members.

Janhavee,
I use a lexicon Omega too. It is a great audio interface. I would suggest getting a good condenser mic to use with it (which requires phantom power) I use the Rode NT1a. When I bought my Lexicon Omega, I got Cubase LE with it. I cant find any info on Pro Track unfortunately. I’ve heard of N track.

Hi Janhavee:
Welcome to muziboo once again. I am happy to see your willingness to learn. You clearly know what your stengths & limitations are.
Making your own creative rendition of a song should never be considered a weakness. It’s a positive thing because, that shows that you are being innovative & different. But at the same time, you have to be sure not to sing off-pitch; because if the sruthi falters, then the whole meaning of singing is gone.
With all the inputs from friends here in muziboo, I am sure you will be able to improve singing-wise as well as recording-wise.
All the very best !

Hello Janavhee ….I have heard couple of your songs and commented. You have a very distinct voice which is very soothing. You sound very good in your lower and mid registers ….need to work on your upper notes though. I dont recommend carbon copies for cover either ….but as long as you can keep the soul of the original alive……you should be fine. One thing to think about is that when the original song was created, the composer of the song wanted those notes and variations ….so as long as we keep the soul of the original and add variations ….it would be good and soothing to the ears. I hope to hear more songs from you in the future….regarding mixing I would say try and get a software like Cubase, its pretty easy to use and is pretty powerful as well. Good luck.
