Amazing stuff Arvind……every single nuance and more delivered with consummate ease……I just cud not help but instantly love your improvisations……the kinda “Konjal” in your voice especially during lala and Nala was enjoyable…the ending was superb……and your instant ability to modulate your timbre to suit the Thgadhinathaga was mind blowing at the end and so much of SPB in this (I am sorry to keep saying this….but cud not help) ……and brilliant recording……Over all, absolute treat and High quality stuff……goes to my fvourites……I am proud of you Arvind….and you know why I am saying this!

Subbu.

What a song! Enjoyed listening your version. Nice improvisations! When you pronounced naNban, I was doubtful for a second because there are so many songs in recent times where naNban is diluted to nanban. Very good job!

Thanks a lot Murali, Subbu, Vidya and Ramya … nice to receive your feedback. Would like to say that this song sung at different times yields different results for me!. My head spins at the work of geninuses who composed and sang it!. We can only try……thanks!.
Ramya … I presume you are saying that my diction was OK… tks. Hey if they can’t say NaNban, how do they say ThoZhi I wonder!. Nowadays better to write in English and read, cos so many english words creeping in too!!. Thank God that we stil have some old songs to fall back on … hehe!. Cheers Ramya … good pickup!. ;-)
Subbu … Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your generous comments of which I am hopefully deserving!. Tks.

This is a dynamic song in that it demands a lot from the singer’s ability to modulate his voice. You have done a great job with it. Excellent work Arvind. Also enjoyed your improvisations. The last line I felt could be done better though.

Arvind – Was not familiar with the original song, but really enjoyed this rendition. You have sung this beautifully. Very difficult song, needs a lot of breath control and vocal range to pull this off. Awesome voice modulations as well…you are one heck of a singer :-)

Thanks for your compliments and glad you enjoyed it. MSV is the father of our tamil light music as far as I am concerned … there were of course great people before him but he was the one to lay the proper road for all future music directors to travel easily, metaphorically speaking!. I love his work just too much … the great man says “the music is in the lyrics itself, I just need to find it!”. Which music director will be so humble as to say that?!. A great inspiring man. I have a photo with him in which I am bending down to adjust to his height … he is small in stature but a giant in music!!!.
Sure, you can do your verion of this song … I will be the first person to enjoy it!. You can do it in your own style which will probably sound much better!. Thanks multi-talented Sowmya!.
Bala (composer/producer) said
Arvind,
You are welcome!
I went through the song once more to check out why I felt the timing issues in my first run. I think the improvisations in the following time stamps is not ‘tight’ with the timing.
3:27 after “nanban enru”
3:57 after “kallaa”
These two are in the second pallavi. I did not find this issue in the first pallavi. Please compare the equivalent time stamps in the first pallavi. But, I am not an expert and this might just be my illusion too! In any case these are just the tiny tiny issues….
Overall, this is an extremely brilliant rendition and you are just an awesome singer….I am a very big fan of your 80s SPB voice!
Arvind R said
Hi Balamurali … I checked it out and I would like to call these as tiny variations … the first area that you mentioned (3:27) … the key there is that the subsequent word ‘Nenjam’ has to come on the beat which has occurred. In 3:57 “kallaa” got extended a bit but the next line “Nee Sollu ….” has to come in after the second beat, which has one again occurred. There are variations present between first stanza and second stanza so cannot compare them … for eg. first stanza (charanam 1) starts after second beat, whereas charanam 2 starts on the second beat, so there is no set pattern because of the words involved … a bit like ghazal singing where there could be variations but some key words have to come on the beat to conform to the rhythm of the song.
Actually Balamurali more than that, this was a tough song on expression with pinpoint accuracy sruthi, which I wish I could further improve on for the future. Thanks for the interesting discussion.
Subbu said
Actually this sounds way better than the original I have on many aspects and hence downloaded this for my collection……I suspect we may not be able to get such high quality original even if we wanna buy……Thanks Again Arvind, actually I missed out to mention on your diction, which always was spot on and have felt in “all” your renditions!
BTW……Interesting discussion upstairs……Thanks to Bala and Sowmya
Regards,
Subbu.

WoW!!! Arvind Sir…. You just blew off this performance…. Though I do not understand the language, there were two things I felt…. the tune is awesome…. and the way you sung, it feels like it is your fresh song…… Very very well sung, Sir… gr8 control over voice during the variations… and yes, your voice resembles SPB so much that for once I felt I was listening to the original…. B’Ful…. 5/5…

Great song and rendition arvind sir. But some portions is surprisingly flat (as you never do that). In the anupallavi portion sindaatha Kanneerillai (kannerillai can be rendered with more expression). I liked the improvisations in rendition of charanam.
Also the last sustain was really superb.
Great job boss.

Excellent choice of song, Arvind! Liked the idea behind all your improvisations. I like the way you emote in all your songs. I am a cynic when it comes to MSV songs (you know that more than any one in this forum :)) but I simply can’t help admiring your choice of songs. Nice to see a handful of likeminded people :)
Diwakar vaasu said
Adithi, what did you mean by you being a cynic when it comes to MSV songs? You have also written “Nice to see a handful of likeminded people” – as I understand Arvind has enormous respect for MSV. I may be missing something here though as regards the point you try to make with ‘cynicism’.

Thanks Adithi and Diwakar for your comments. Much appreciated. Even I am not sure about the cynicism mentioned by Adithi. Cheers.
