This ghazal has been one of my favorites since long and the very first time I heard in JS’s voice I fell in love with it. Understanding Mirza’s poetry can be overwhelming at times, therefore I often refer to Ghulam Rasool Meher’s Book “Nawa-e-Sarosh – Complete Dewaan with translation”.
Here is an excerpt from this book in which Ghulam Rasool Meher gave some insight about this ghazal and wrote:
[Ye ghazal “Dehli Urdu Akhbar” ki ishaat babut 13/Feb/1853 main chappi thi. Bahadur Shah Zafar ne Mirza Ghalib se farmaish ki ke aisee ghazal kahi jaye jis per misra lagana dushwar balke namumkin ho, chunanche Mirza Ghalib ne ye ghazal kahi aur Mirza Nooruddin ne kamal ujlat (meaning: fatafut) se makhmus tayyar karke padh diya. Bahadur Shah Zafar ne behud daad di aur 5 dafa issko suna.]
After reading all this I admired the efforts of Jagjit Singh even more as to how well and perfect melody he came up with for this ghazal which appears not that complicated. Jis ghazal per misra lagana dushwar ho usski composition kitni mushkil rahi hogi. Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869) is long gone but I feel like Mirza must have hummed similarly.
This ghazal was presented in the documentary movie on Indian TV where Naseeruddinn Shah performed the role of Mirza Ghalib and JS poured his heart out on Ghalib’s ghazals. Its in the scale of D. I will scribble each and every friend with a thank you note.

Naqvi Sahab, main bhi Chandrakant Ji ke peeche peeche yahan aa gaya! Kalame-Ghalib sunane ki tulana Einstein ki Theory of Relativity padhne se ki jaa sakti hai. Mukam pe pohonch ke uska tathya asan lagta hai par safar pe jaana mukeem hone se zyada behtar hai! Main kahan, Mirza Sahab se Einstein pe pohonch gaya! Lol!

Raah mein hum mile kahan, bazm mein vo bulaye kyon?

Mujhe yeh gazal JS aur Abida Ji ki awaz mein hi acchi lagi hai. Apne iss ghazal ke jazbaton ko barkarar rakha! Apki awaz mein sun ke sukoon sa mehsoos hua. Commentary ke liye bhi shukriya! Aaj kuch naya seekhne ko mila.

I think I’ve read this ghazal of Ghalib saheb before but NEVER listened to it…… so the first time listening in your voice…. well what a rendition Naqvi saheb…. you poured in the feeling required for this ghazal and the nostalgic feel was at peak on endings like uthaye kyun…. sataye kyun, Haye Kyun etc…. thats where you were on top of it…. wonderful selection and beautifully rendered…. really enjoyed it…. keep sharing like that.

Mirza Ghalib ki Ghajal!!! kya baat hai!!!

ye ghazal aur kuchh aur ghazalein ek book me padhi thee, hindi script mein likhi huee. In fact kaafi baar padhta hoon jab time milta hai. mera bahut favorite hai, khair mirza ghalib to sab kaa hi ka fav hai.

sun ke pataa chalta hai kaafi mushkil composition hai lekin ghazal kaafi khoobsoorat hai. aapki singing ke baare me main jo bhi kahoon kam hai. Urdu kabhi padhi nahi aur aati bhi nahi par gazalon aur geeton me sunkar kuchh words seekh gaya hoon.

kamaal ki pasand hai aapki aur behtareen gaayki hai aapki. keep singing like that.

itna ziada likhe ke liye maafi chahta hoon.(lol) per dil kar raha hai likhta hi rahoon.

Arey nahi Bhai Ashish tumne aaj pehli bar itna lamba kisi ko likha hai padhkar tabbiyat khush ho gayee aur scribble karne ke bajaye yehin jawab likh raha hoon. Dekho Mian ghazal tu waisee he 200 saal poorani hai thoda aur der se sun liya tu kitni aur puraani hojayegi!!!Lol….Mujhe bohut khushi hai Urdu padhte ho chahe Hindi script main he kyoun na ho….Aik he baat hai. Naqvi Sahab, maine aapka scribble aaj, abhi pada aur foreign suna. Main ye gazal pehli baar sun rahi hoon. Aapka gaya hua har geet/gazal original lagta hai. Bohut maza aaya. Is gazal ka background ke bare me padhne ke baad, is ki ’value’aur zyada badh gayi. aapka agla gazal bhi sunna hai.
